On a recent business trip to Austin I had a little free time to get out and about to snap some photos of this cool town, thanks to my brother who lives there, and to my feet for when I was without a car.

First place I visited was a brand new, small subdivision known as SOL, which stands for Solutions Oriented Living. At build-out it will be a forty house community with each house capable of near-zero energy consumption. The community will attempt to collect rainwater that runs off the homes and streets. I have corresponded with SOL via their Facebook page and they are looking to build a similar project here in Fort Worth. It will be very cool if that happens, as we really could use a good example of energy efficient development in this area. Further info about SOL at www.solaustin.com.

The particular homes in my pics may not suit everyone's architectural tastes; I think the community overall will improve in appearance as landscaping matures and there is more intermix between single and two story homes in the development.

My favorite house model in the development so far:

Not too crazy about the color selection and facade detail, but the overall shape I like:

A good example of how this house might look better as landscaping and it surroundings age and develop. Looks kind of raw right now to me:

The business trip had me at the UT Campus just north of downtown Austin. What a great place to set a photographer loose during his free time!

Locals call this building "The Finger". Hmm...I wonder why? :)
