Not wanting to get all "artsy" in the photography area but want to share this shot. I like it. It is a complete mistake. (I was about to take a picture of something in the distance this evening, bumped my tripod and got this shot. Was not sure what it even was at first. It is a closeup of lights reflecting off of the Carter Burgess building. I did have to laugh tho when I realized that this is not the first mistake shot to be presented in some fashion. Reminds me of the movie Rain Man when the mentally effected guy is taking completely random shots.

BTW, I am still trying to figure out what precisely this is a reflection of. It appears that there is some kind of yellow writing on a white billboard. It is even possible that the glass on this building is bowed in a slightly parabolic shape and this reflected image is even farther away then you would think, kind of acting as a magnifier. I speculate...

I have just enough little boy in me to love armored trucks hauling cash.
BTW I am buying all new photo gear this week. Likely tomorrow. Would be buying it today if Fort Worth Camera were open. I leaned many lessons about buying photo gear on line. Some on line stores are better than other but none as good as a store in your neighborhood.
The only thing left for me to decided is on a new lens for this new camera. Either a 24-105 F4.0L IS , a 70-200 2.8L IS or a 50mm F1.2. This is to say, speak or for ever (At least another 11 months again) hold your peace. My only piece of gear remaining will be my 400 5.6L. I will be parting with my new Rebel XSi, 10-22 and 60mm macro. Sadly. All 11 months old.

I got my full frame 5D Mark ii tonight. It is crazy good. Had so much fun taking pictures and HD movies I did not have time to post any.
Is just amazing. (I know you are already hip to full frame. For me it is a 10 year old boy's Christmas!) Also bought a new lens. 70-200 2.8L IS . Wow... All from Fort Worth Camera at the same price as on-line. I did pay sales tax of course, but they were too fresh. And I didn't even get ripped off or told they had something they didn't or got my stuff switched with gray market stuff without a battery and warranty. Refreshing.

I was introduced to this forum by my father (djold1) and have enjoyed your postings over the last year. I was on the printer side of digital photography and got back into the photo side this year with a Canon SX10 IS (and thank goodness for the IS part). I live out on Lake Weatherford and everything I want a picture of is 100 yards away, so the zoom was the essential part of that decison.

It's a great camera to learn on with a lot of manual control (and low initial cost), but I've had the pleasure of using several of Canon's full frame products and have seen the output on our printers, so I know the diff. I look forward to seeing you and your new camera in operation.

IS on a camera. I just used it for the first time with my new lens last night. That makes me last one on-board. I did not believe it could work. But it does. Pure witchcraft apparently. It works different ways in different cameras but is just amazing. I took a shot last night in the dark (near dark) at 1/13th of a second that is pretty stink'n sharp. Could hardly believe it. I would have guessed it to have been at least 1/60th or 1/125. Great news for me as there are two things I am famous for. Hating a flash and wandering the city in the dark. And my new camera does not even have a flash. So way handy.

You live in a great area. Get some pictures up in the "just out of town" or whatever that thread is called. If I lived where you do I would be busy with my telescope. (You might look for the space station with the shuttle attached in the far north tonight at at 8:13 and 8:14pm... ) I am foolish enough to try to get a pic of it!

I bought two new lenses tonight. (Fort Worth Camera, again... thanks for the help Jeff)
Got a 17-40mm 4.0L and a 50mm 1.2L . Just had time to play with the first before it got dark.
Here are three shots. I am very happy with it. Most of this pretty must be contributed to the just rain cleaned air but the lens is looking great to me.

This shot looks like I had on a gradiant filter or something. In fact, I don't even have a UV filter for it yet. It is just the weather heading East.

Thank you. You know, as I look at the pic again I realized that to me it looks like model buildings. You know, a pretend kind of city that you take to your banker when you need a few billion to start construction of your skyscraper. It does have a surreal look to it in the strong setting sun lighting. (and a good lens and camera)

Speaking of models, they had a model of The Tower in the sales trailer that we all stared at for hours deciding on our next home. That model (Like 4' tall), is in the Southwest ground level office of The Tower. As Tony Landrum, the developer, has sold the building, he asked us what we should do with that model. (A VERY good model in extreme detail. People standing on a few balconies etc...) They said the would have to remove glass to get it out of that office and it would be a few thousand dollars. Go for it we said. Lets keep it and put it in the managers office. It meant a lot to us for the 18 months between giving them a bunch of money and seeing our condo's for the first time.

In this same picture, I can't help but want to give that South Tandy Tower a paint job. That North Tower looks 50 times better. City Place II or whatever.

Same shot you have seen many times. But with my 5D MK II and my new Canon 50 1.2L lens. This 1.2 lens has widespread disagreement as to how useful it is. Not that it doesn't have some downsides, but an argument could also be made that it is the best lens in the world. Some of the disadvantages are a depth of field at 1.2 that can put somebody's nose in focus and their eyes out of focus. Not a big deal to me. For portraits up close, I will stop down to 1.8 or so. Many times I want such a shallow depth of field however. It is heavy and it is expensive. ($1400. discounted) No IS. No zoom. Just quality glass.
Fine and simple. Here is a shot I took this morning. Not the best way to showcase a lens like this but good enough. Remember the image you see has been reduced many fold. (Original is 5600 X 3700)

Gee, all those modern buildings make the old churches (1st Methodist in the first pic, 1st Christian in the second) look almost out of place.

I wonder, BTW, where the foks at 1st Christian way back when got the idea to put up such a Greek-looking edifice. It looks more Greek (from the outside, anyway). than the old St Demetrios Church on the North Side.

Spur 280. 3 points of minor interest. 1. The street lights have been out for weeks. (Though not complaining). 2. Yesterday the first 50 2010 Chevy Camaro's ran (fast) from Dallas to Fort Worth with a Police escort.

Amazing cars. In my opinion, the greatest combination of speed, handling, efficiency and cost of any vehicle the world has ever known. Thinking about getting in line for one. These things looked even better in person. Don't get in front of one!

I'm not usually a fan of a digital camera taking black and white pictures as it seems disingenuous to the process but I had a project that needed pictures of FW Icons quickly. With the overcast skies I didn't really have great ligthing but I found taking night pictures and converting to bw yields some interesting results. Here a few from the project.

They are nice shots but I agree, I have never been a fan of black and white. I would compare it to listening to the old radio mysteries that I liked to listen to in the late 40's and early 50's (before we could afford TV) and listening to them today and still trying to get the same thrill out of them.

I liked the B&W's a lot. However, the color photo of the Water Gardens could be the most spectacular picture ever posted on this Forum.

I'm a big fan of black & white. There's nothing inherently "old fashioned" about it, to me - rather, it's a stylistic choice. Some photos and situations work much, much better as black & white than as color.

For what it's worth, I prefer the black & white versions of the photos you posted to the color ones.

Thanks Monee but I think you might have picked up a little piggy flu and may have been a little overdramatic but thank you for the compliment.

AG I don't see b/w as an old fashioned format. There are certain b/w shots I really like but they are as far as I'm aware of shot on B/W film. I guess what I am uncomfortable with is that I have this incredibly sophisticated tool (compared to a holga) that captures 1000s of colors and produces an image. I then discard most of that information in order to produce an image format that originated from a format that could only produce a monochrome image.

I have just inherited a Yashica-A and I'm going to try my hand at developing my own b/w film. I may be a little too OCD on the b/w thing and it may just take some learning and experimentation on my own to appreciate a b/w image produced from a digital camera. I wonder if I saw the b/w image first without seeing the color if I would like it more. Sorry for the ramble....

Why should a digital camera be any different than film? Some scenes call for black & white. I don't care if the camera's capturing all those colors if what I want as an end result is black & white. It's stylistic, not technical. The camera is just a means to an end. I don't serve the camera's capabilities - it serves those of my mind's eye.

I agree some scenes call for black and white more than others.
I have seen an increase of some scenes (mostly in wedding pictures) that use black and white in most of the picture and just one or two areas of color - done in post processing. Some must like this style but of the ones I have seen I think they would be better left as either all color or all black and white.
Infrared pictures are interesting. You can get some interesting effects from landscape infrared - especially involving clouds or fog. Film cameras probably work best for this as you can buy infrared film and not have to modify the camera. Once you change the filtering in the digital camera for this it's pretty much useless for anything but infrared.

Never swapping my CF again. Though the blame really lies on my cheap card reader that a pin broke off on. And me for knowing I had a problem and still shoving my chip back in my brand new camera...

Bummer is, the patch cord is really slow compared to a card reader. Is hard on a type I like myself.

Very funny, monee. The lighter colored rectangle on the corner of the building had "Meacham's" painted on the brick. As you can see that painted sign was much larger. After Meacham's closed, the paint was removed, but the rest of the facade wasn't cleaned and that is why the corner appears different.

Those new Camaros (from the front end) Look more like an 88 Monte Carlo LS rather then an actual 68 Camaro. IMO Still a great car.
