The views from the park are very nice.

#151851 Open Streets

Posted by John T Roberts on 15 April 2024 - 03:24 PM in Arts and Entertainment

I was also there, and enjoyed my stay.  I was a little tired from walking on the Near Southside Version of the Downtown Fort Worth Walking Tour, but I walked the entire event and stayed a little while at some of the booths.

#151850 The Old TXU North Main Power Plant

Posted by John T Roberts on 15 April 2024 - 03:21 PM in Historic Buildings and Preservation

Austin, I'm already ahead of you.  I read the article early this morning.  As for the Power Plant, I'll believe it when I see it.

That one portion of the facade is original to the second phase of the shopping center.  The two adjacent stores have covered over that brick facade.  I will go back and check some of my archives to see what I can determine.  With all of the construction and with Barnes & Noble and Blue Mesa closing, I don't go over there at all.

#151841 Eastern Bluebird Picked for City's Official Bird

Posted by John T Roberts on 15 April 2024 - 07:56 AM in City Issues

I have seen many of them on the Trinity Trails.  If you don't look closely, you might just think they are another small bird.  Back when I was doing some photography for my office, I was sent out to our Game On location near I-820 and I-30.  A pair of bluebirds had a nest in one of the newly planted trees, and I stood under that tree to take a photograph. I was dive bombed by the nesting couple.  They were very aggressive for a small bird.

Nice.  I have been watching them train out of my window at work all last week.  However, I did not take any time out to photograph them.

#151829 Deco 969 - 27 Floors, 315 ft. - 969 Commerce St.

Barricades are still up, but the sidewalk is open and parking has been striped along Commerce Street.

The daylighting was nice on the artwork at the entrance, and some of the exterior lights on the base were turned on.

Finally, there is plywood installed over the area where the restaurant sign has been designed into the building's structure.

#151828 Downtown Fort Worth Walking Tour

Posted by John T Roberts on 14 April 2024 - 01:31 PM in Announcements

The Bicocchi Building was built immediately after the fire.  However, he had owned the property since 1899 and actually built several commercial buildings on the site before the Southside Fire in 1909.  We talked a little bit about the Fort Worth High School across Jennings Ave. on the tour.  It actually survived the fire in 1909, but ironically was destroyed in 1910 by a fire.  The good news was that the FWISD had voted prior to the fire to replace the building with a newer and larger high school on South Jennings.  It was completed in 1911.

#151821 Eastern Bluebird Picked for City's Official Bird

Posted by John T Roberts on 12 April 2024 - 02:32 PM in City Issues

I think some do and some don't.  This isn't a bad choice.  I'm seeing more and more bluebirds when I'm out on the trails or in some of the larger parks.

Online voters picked the City's Official Bird.  The Fort Worth Report has the story:

I prefer the looks of the Perkins & Will design.

#151805 West Bend, Formerly River Plaza

Posted by John T Roberts on 11 April 2024 - 12:51 PM in Commercial

Since the TDLR application is broadscoping and limited in blank space to fill in, I would guess that ground floor retail is the same as the shell retail space.  I interpret the word "core" to mean the building's core with elevators, stairs, and the typical elements found within the core portions of a multi-story building.

Nitixope, they would have to be flexible.

#151787 Grain Silos in South Ft. Worth

Posted by John T Roberts on 10 April 2024 - 08:28 PM in Miscellaneous

I didn't get home until late, so I did not notice the smoke.

The cotton seed mill was further north, closer to W. Biddison Street.  This silo is right off of W. Dickson Street, approximately 3 blocks south.

#151778 HEB Considering Site for New Store

Posted by John T Roberts on 10 April 2024 - 01:42 PM in Commercial

Personally, if I have to go to an H-E-B store, I will drive to Burleson.  The one thing that I don't like about the Burleson store is that it is always busy and the parking lot is always full.

#151768 Burnett Plaza

Posted by John T Roberts on 10 April 2024 - 07:55 AM in Fort Worth Architecture

JBB, the answer to your question shows up on the western facade of the building.  The elevator cores were used as a design feature due to the narrowness of the building.  Each back of elevators stops at a certain height and the office floors pick up above the terminated elevator shafts.  The levels where the elevator lobbies exist have windows looking out to the west.  It appears that there are four banks of elevators that serve approximately 10 or 11 floors each.

The city of Fort Worth is taking renewed steps toward the demolition of an abandoned grain elevator complex on the edge of the Worth Heights Neighborhood.  The story in in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.  Below is a link, if you have a subscription:

#151742 Eclipse Fort Worth goes dark April 8, 2024

Posted by John T Roberts on 08 April 2024 - 06:43 PM in Miscellaneous

I agree with you, Nitixope.  It was a little other-worldly and a feeling that there is a higher power.  As I had mentioned before I left home, I was about 18 miles south of my house in Johnson County.  Out in the country, it is a little different than in the city.  My experience showed me that the eclipse was everything people had said it would be.  Crickets started chirping before totality and we saw several birds circling for a perch in the trees.  Quite a bit before totality, Kalleen's goat started to bed down, and her chickens went into the coop.  Finally the last interesting thing during totality that I didn't expect was that we saw a couple of bats fly through.  We were very lucky down south.  It was mostly clear during the entire final phases of the eclipse.  I did see both Venus and Jupiter on each side of the corona of the sun.

#151713 Oncor/Old Electric Building Getting Revamp

Posted by John T Roberts on 06 April 2024 - 06:43 PM in Commercial

The staff report is out on the Landmarks case, and it includes both the local and National Register Nominations.  The PDF file is 113 pages, but it has some interesting history of the Fort Worth National Bank and other banks in Downtown.  The National Register Nomination even mentions this website as a source.  This is interesting reading.

Unfortunately, no. I'm going to try to reach out again this week.  However, I have a minor procedure for my dental implants, so I may be out of commission, some.
