It's interesting to see some of the smaller cities out west of us doing some things here and there. Not much major, but exciting to see any city better its downtowns.

Lots of cities are building convention space and adjacent hotels, here's a sampling.

Abilene is looking into a mixed use "festival district" adjacent to its convention center with hotel, retail and living space.

Midland is proposing a Convention Center, park space, and Hotel all on the same block.

It also looks like Midland has built a mixed-use apartments-over-retail building on an old parking lot just East of this development.

Yes, given that Fort Worth is where the West begins; I like to see things happening in some of our most relatable  West Texas cities.

Indeed, feeling more passionate for them than for either east or south.

Looks like some cities are banking on the inevitable bounce back for the oil and gas business.

The Dubai method. Use that oil money to build a tourism industry. Fort Worth is banking heavily on hospitality as well.

Excellent rundown Austin. Thanks for posting! We want to see all of Texas do well. Not just the big metros.

The downtown areas of some of these smaller towns could certainly use help.

Midland-Odessa was really hopping back before oil and gas prices plummeted.  My brother in law worked for a gas rig parts manufacturer and his company owned a massive McMansion in Midland to avoid putting their employees up in the expensive hotel rooms around town.

I just moved out of Wall Street Lofts at the end of June. That convention center construction was definitely annoying especially when trying to grap a quick nap at lunchtime.

I'm not sure, but the mixed-used project immediately west of the CC (where the courthouse used to stand) is on hold or cancelled last time I heard.

There were stores on Berry and Camp Bowie that didn't make it. I don't believe they've done all that well in this area. I know of at least one other store in Colleyville that closed after being open a short time.

The closest one to me was on Hulen and that's a Philly shop now. The one that was on West 7th was closed because of "parking issues"... that I could maybe understand. But I don't get the others.

Mine was filled every time I was there and that's one of my favorite places... I ALWAYS went.

Worth noting as well that El Paso doing quite well in the urban redevelopment game.  I am out there 1-2x per year and it has been really fun to watch.  Things really ramped up when they got the AAA Padres affiliate from Tucson, and built a downtown stadium for them.  Like Fort Worth's help from the Bass family in the 80's, El Paso is benefiting greatly from a couple of families that have spearheaded things (Fosters and Hunts).

One recent article: http://kfoxtv.com/ne...ancy-02-13-2017

There are some amazing buildings in downtown El Paso, with this being among them:

http://www.elpasoinc...17a43b2370.html

Trost & Trost did some great work in West Texas and New Mexico in the early 20th century and I have stayed in several of their buildings over the years (including the Paisano in Marfa and El Capitan in Van Horn, which are essentially the same design).

Those cars are gorgeous.  The test car looks brand new.  Just glancing at their website, their route map could use some work.  The street names weren't readable and the dark gray route line on the light gray street grid was hard to see.

They have lift cassettes installed in the center door. I have never seen one used in service, but I'm guessing that the operator will have to move to the back entrance to operate the lift. Brookville Equipment must be very busy as they are producing cars for OKC, San Francisco, El Paso and Milwaukee, IIRC.

We could have had this in Fort Worth if the city council hadn't sent our money back.

The Brio station on the slide show is for El Paso's "Bus Rapid Transit" (BRT) system, I believe.

Unlike modern streetcars, historic trolleys rarely stop at stations with platforms.

I saw a picture on Facebook the other day of the new Convention Center in Odessa. It is topped out and looking close to dried in.

I visited downtowm Amarillo for the first time ever this weekend and enjoyed it. Polk street is pretty fun with a lot of cute small businesses and Buchanan Street has quite a bit of new developent including 2 garages, a 4 floor office building for Xcel energy, a new downtown ballpark, a new performing arts center, and a 6 floor Embassy Suites which is quite nice. It's quite a good walkable package and I'd love to stay a weekend there and really spend the time to check it out.

Awesome.  Just in time for the island to possibly get hit by a tropical storm/hurricane this week.  And it's technically in the warning cones of both storms as of this morning.

Every time I've been to Galveston, my expectations were exceeded --- I have been there fewer than 10 times and my expectations were low.... The beach is kinda gross, the old towne has such a great ambiance, the wilderness areas are intense.

If the beach had been established in my mind as a shore rather than beach, I would have had a better idea what was going on with that part of the gulf.... I was used to Corpus Christi beaches, and especially the white sand and clear water you get in the National Seashore.... Galveston really could become a rock solid tourist destination. How does Miami survive the hurricanes? The resemblance to New Orleans' French Quarter is historic and ought to be brought back to prominence.

...casinos are not my favorite, but if they were allowed on Galveston Island, the HSR would have a viable reason to get out there.

I'm glad to hear Galveston will finally be restoring its trolley service soon. It's pathetic that it's taken the city over a decade to restore it.

That said, I'm not sure historic-style trolleys are much of an upgrade over buses. Unlike modern streetcars, historic-style trolleys don't stop at stations with level-boarding platforms.

But, since the tracks exist, the city ought to be using them.

...casinos are not my favorite, but if they were allowed on Galveston Island, the HSR would have a viable reason to get out there.

At this point, I'd be happy to see any form of public transit connect Houston and Galveston. It's pathetic that there aren't even any buses connecting the two cities.

Hmmm... I'm noticing a trend about Galveston transit... and it's not a good one.

If the beach had been established in my mind as a shore rather than beach

Any time anyone asks "what's the best beach in Texas?", my reply is "Destin, FL". And that's frustrating, because Galveston and some of the other beach towns in Texas have all of the charm that the towns in the Redneck Riviera lack. When I vacation at the beach, I go to be in and around the water and I just can't stand the beaches in Texas.

^check out Malaquite Beach sometime. Most of my adolescent and teen years were in Victoria, and Matagorda Bay shaped my gulf water experience.... the only time I actually made it to the gulf was Mustang Island or Galveston Island. I'm disappointed to say I have no idea what the beaches on Matagorda Island are like, but I also want it to stay as unspoiled as possible!

One year, a 4th of July camping trip to Padre Island National Seashore and Malaquite Beach was a revelation! It's mostly undeveloped - more for nature lovers than a scene, but the sand is white and clean and the water is blue! After growing up with the disappointment that Texas beaches are not sun-kissed tropical beauties, the national seashore eased my mind. It's nothing like the World Most Beautiful Beaches, but it's there....

We took a couple of Port Aransas vacations when I was growing up and went to Malaquite and the north end of Padre Island where you can drive on the beach.  It is a stark contrast to the beaches in Galveston and Port Aransas.  I remember having a great time (we were with a large group on both trips) and I also remember that the beach past the paved road on Padre was pretty junked out - lots of trash and large debris, abandoned cars, abandoned boats, etc.  This was 30+ years ago, so it might be kept up better now.

A friend of mine likes to vacation in Rockport for the fishing and they went to their city beach on Aransas Bay.  It looks like nothing I've ever seen in Texas.

The older I get, the more I like my beach vacation to be easy on the mind and body - I like staying on a sugar sand beach with crystal clear water where I can see my feet in chest deep water  and wtih chairs and umbrellas provided where I can roll out of bed and be in the water in 15 minutes.  You can call me a beach snob and I'll proudly wear the title.
