Race sponsors get geography lesson

By Anna M. Tinsley

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Fort Worth Councilman Jim Lane has a word of advice for NASCAR promoters: Get a map.

The Texas Motor Speedway -- site of the O'Reilly 300 Busch Series race Saturday and the Samsung/RadioShack 500 Nextel Cup race Sunday -- is in Fort Worth, not that city to the east.

Lane offered the geography lesson Tuesday after spotting a promotional T-shirt for the O'Reilly event that touted the race in "Dallas, Texas."

With a sample of the affronting attire on hand, Lane urged a letter-writing campaign to any O'Reilly Auto Parts store or Mobil gas station. Mobil is helping present the local race.

"I would like the good citizens of Fort Worth to remind them that the Texas Motor Speedway is in Fort Worth," said Lane, whose district includes the speedway. "I'd like it corrected.

"While you're at it, write the president of American Airlines and ask him to teach his pilots and flight attendants not to welcome people home to Dallas."

Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief agreed.

"I think we have every reason to be concerned and offended by this obvious oversight," Moncrief said.

I told you guys that Irving-based ExxonMobil should be on your no spend list. They are very disrespectful to Fort Worth.

O'Reilly is now on my $hit list as well.

It's time for Lane to step up, take off his 10 gallon hat and start leading the Fort Worth Sports Authority, owner of Texas Motor Speedway. B)

And add Pepsi, the "official cola of D/FW Airport to the list of offending oversighters:

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is celebrating the grand opening of its Skylink people mover system- at least on cans of Pepsi with this label ----

"DFW International Airport Celebrates the Grand Opening of SKYLINK - THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRPORT TRAIN! - DALLAS, TEXAS"

Yupp, not a mention of Fort Worth, well except for -/FW which could also mean Fort Wayne, Fort White, Fort Wingate, Fort Washington, Fort Washkie, Fort Wool...I think you get the picture...

TMS shirts recalled

By Anna M. Tinsley

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

O'Reilly Auto Parts sure knows where Fort Worth is now.

Hundreds of local residents contacted the company this week, saying they were offended by a T-shirt promoting Saturday's O'Reilly 300 Busch Series race.

The shirt placed the Texas Motor Speedway in "Dallas, Texas" rather than Fort Worth.

"It was just a stupid mistake," said Ron Byerly, O'Reilly's vice president of advertising, marketing and training. "We definitely would never do anything like that on purpose.

"We are committed to making it right."

Byerly said that the company had contracted with an Indianapolis printer and that no one realized the blunder.

"We're not perfect," Byerly said. "From time to time, everybody is going to make a common mistake. I hope everyone understands that."

O'Reilly promptly recalled the T-shirts at a loss of about $10,000, Byerly said. By Wednesday afternoon, most local stores contacted had already pulled the item.

Fort Worth City Councilman Jim Lane -- who on Tuesday urged residents to complain to O'Reilly and race affiliate Mobil about the perceived slight -- said he is satisfied by the company's quick response.

"I think that O'Reilly has always been a good partner of TMS," Lane said Wednesday. "On behalf of the good citizens of Fort Worth, we accept their apology."

I was so mad when I read the article that I couldn't even speak when I called into Ben Dover's show on KRLD to discuss this matter.

One day I'm going to start an organization to combat this nonsense.

Apologies are nice but these sorts of blunders are too frequent and ought to require more than a simple apology.

My feelings are that these companies (Pepsi, O'Reilly, etc) ought to be asked to plant a tree, sponsor a park bench or create a micro park in downtown Fort Worth; some sort of a living or physical reminder which I and others can visit to feel some sort of closure.

EXACTLY. They oughta pay up the $500K to have the FW name involved with the race. A settlement of sorts. Who gave Jimmy the right to accept their apology. Must have accepted the apology over a nice piece of Del Frisco Prime.

How about steak dinners at Del Frisco's for all of FW, on the O'Reilly tab.

Give me a freakin' break. They made a mistake, albeit a common one, they've apologized and they're fixing the problem. Would it make you guys happy if they pulled their sponsorship of the race and shut down their FW area stores to make good on disrespecting the sacred Fort Worth name?

If some of you freak out over something this petty, I can't imagine how you might react to something that really mattered. Aren't there bigger problems in life and in the world than this?

Bottom line: They made a mistake. They got called on it. They apologized and appear to be making a sincere effort to rectify the problem. That should be the end of the story. The lack of perspective I see around here sometimes is mindboggling.

I couldn't agree more. When I first moved here from LA, I was at awe of the sights, sonds, and friendliness associated witht a not well known N. Texas city-town. Down the road I had encountered a sense of the FW is struggling and trying, but the "folks" here are in this bewildered state in why they don't get MAD Props for being a DFW metroplex player. Second billing is OK, we wil never out duel Dallas in ANYTHING, except for Rodeo. But you see, the "folks" here have to convey more of an effort in showing THE WORLD how we want to be perceived as. I get a kick out of Lobs telling us that he goes in front of the CCouncil and pretty much vents his fellings and thoughts, AND HE DREAMS. We need more of that, let's put our top 10 list together and mull it over from time to time, and TRULY SHAPE OUR TOWN to what it is yet to BECOME. Share the VISION.

Crying and moaning about the small stuff will only impede our vision on the BIG PRIZE. So we have to be willing to sacrifice this program and that one to gain up, not stagnate around like we have in the PAST. As far as the Cowboys STEAL or DEAL, we lost out, so let's face it, and many of the powers that be here HAD NO VISION for the great that would come about with it. Can you all imagine what we would be saying if NASCAR was at it's mediocre state now like it was in the 80's. TMS would not even be discussed with the same passion as we see here now on the Forum. So yes, we should feel thankful for the TMS, we should be willing to work with them and their sponsorships. CCouncil folks AND ESPECIALLY THE MAYOR should have represented the constituents better on it, by making sure it NEVER happened in the first place, but to also ensure that FW is being put on evryones map when it comes to tourism and entertainment and dining AND CULTURE.

One initial feeling I did have when I first moved here was the sense of being left out. IN A SMALL TOWN! MY culture and others don't get the same acceptance and celebration city-wide here as the "cowboy/western" culture does. So that is one of my takes on this city as former outsider turned insider, looking in. :roflol:

This sound great. There are neighborhood associations and other groups like that that focus on certain areas, why not one that focuses on the big picture. Citizens for the Big Picture Committee.(working name)

I think this whole t-shirt thing would be one of the things that this group should deal with, how to get our local representatives to put national focus on Fort Worth. Get people to separate Fort Worth from Dallas.

I'm tired of this: "Where are you from?"
"I'm from Fort Worth" [silence] "Just west of Dallas"
"Oh, I'd like to visit Dallas sometime."

To me, that is close to the top of the top 10 list.

I guess we'll just have to accomodate the Springfield flunky's Show Me State attitude. Here's the deal--you bring him down and show him Fort Worth, then send him to me and I'll show him Fort Davis. I'm sure we'll both make a big impression on him.

I just got back in town from a long car trip from Kansas City and no wonder nobody knows where TX Motor Speedway is! I came down 35W going south past the speedway and I never saw a FW city limit sign or anything saying "Welcome to Fort Worth" by the freeway. I did see a sign very close by the speedway, just as it was well into clear view that said Fort Worth 38 miles. Oh i did see a sign that led to an exit right next to the speedway that said Dallas/Bridgeport with an arrow to it. What must out of town visitors think? To be honest, i really never saw a fw city limit sign at all. is there one coming in from the north?
