One of, if not the major pillar of the Fort Worth cultural landscape, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (VCIPC) could be at risk because of the labor dispute taking place between management and the FWSO.  I have been following this from a distance, but the risk to the VCIPC now deserves more of our attention.

I have thought for a while that symphony orchestras might be shared between cities.  Fort Worth has Baltimore City as a sister city; and Baltimore has a very well regarded symphony.  Baltimore, like Fort Worth and like many cities, has many pressing needs.  Why not Fort Worth and Baltimore share symphony orchestras (Fall/Winter in Fort Worth; Spring/Summer in Baltimore). Could a single symphony serving two or more cities be a viable and stabilizing than is a symphony supported by only one city?

The article is tagged for your information.  Reading the comments, you will find that piracy is on the mind of at least one commentator. :angry2:

Pretty scary prospect, but the Cliburn people say it won't move: http://www.star-tele...e113153603.html

I'm not sure that flying an orchestra across the country regularly for events helps anyone's financial difficulties.

If we were going to be sharing with anyone it'd probably be Dallas.

You would be inviting "the fox into the hen house". The VCIPC would morph from a Fort Worth Institution to a Dallas Fort Worth Institution to eventually a Dallas Institution... and so on

Maybe its time for the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra to step up in class.

Van Cliburn competition moves to Dallas. Now having read the whole article. And after reading the headlines and after my knee jerk reaction. The explanation to me still sounds b.s. :glare:

It's the junior competition.  The flagship competition in 2021 is still planned for Bass Hall.  Still disappointing nonetheless.

Perhaps they lined up a big sponsor on the condition that they do it in Dallas.  I would think the junior competition doesn't attract as much sponsorship revenue, so maybe someone from Dallas approached them.

Bravo!

TCU honoring Van Cliburn and in the same breath making the connection stronger of a world renown figure to Fort Worth.

TCU donors have lots of money

They have already raised $500 million of the Billion dollar endowment campaign that will have a public funding drive next year.  This is in addition to the hundreds of millions raised for the ACS east side and other announced projects.

Apparently. :)

Van Cliburn competition announces that Russian pianists will be allowed to participate, given that their involvement is not state sponsored and they are not government officials:
