Yesterday was over on 7th Street and took a couple CLOUDY pictures of the new bridge.  Think will try again next Thursday 30Oct14 around 10am ish

My wife and I have been done the Christmas light flight three times now.  It's always a good time.  They frequently have a groupon which makes it very reasonable.

Does this spire seems a bit weird and under whelming; what purpose does it serve or is it just my lack of appreciation?

It's really not a spire.  It's called the Star Tower and it marks the corner of the building and a main entry point to where you can go into the corridor leading to the exhibit hall, the main lobby of the building, or up to the ballroom.  It was never meant to make a huge statement.  With a building this size, it would take a massive tower to do that.  You might take a look at the photographs within the individual building listing at Fort Worth Convention Center to get a better idea of how it works with the overall building and the Water Gardens.

Is this an otter I saw in the Trinity today? He was in the old oxbow by Pier 1.

It's not an otter.  It is a nutria.  The oxbow is full of them, as is a good bit of the river downstream to the dam just east of Main Street.

Airfield Falls taken tonight.  The water was already starting to go down over the falls.  However, there is still more water going over them than what I'm used to seeing.

A friend of mine posted a pic of the falls to Facebook over the weekend and it had me wondering: Is it naturally occurring or was it constructed? I guess I would be surprised if it was naturally occurring since the river inside the loop has been altered so drastically over the years for flood control purposes.

Edit: I remembered as soon as I posted that the falls are actually on Farmers Branch Creek, so I suppose that increases the chances of them being natural.

Thanks for the comments, JBB.  The falls are natural, but there have been some man made intrusions.  Until recently, they were on the NAS/JRB property.  At the top of the falls was a base access road with a pour of concrete over the creek.  If you look at www.historicaerials.com, you can see the falls all the way back to 1952.  The creek is still in its natural location until the levees turn into the hillside.  Originally, the creek turned north before it emptied into the Trinity River, several yards northwest of where it does at the current time.  With the work of building the trail to the falls, the creek was straightened a little bit and boulders were placed on the sides to reduce erosion.

...and another thought: Considering how much rail contributes to the local economy, it seems odd that there isn't much more passenger rail in the transportation mix. This picture seems to bring that home with a massive rail yard next to a multi-lane tollway.

It's probably worthy of a thread on its own, but I'll go ahead and say it here. Part of the problem is that the railroads don't want to share their tracks with passenger rail and, even when they're willing to concede, the financial and safety considerations make it cost prohibitive. And, hey, railroads swing a lot of influence. How much more expensive was CTP and how many years delayed (and thus even more expensive) because they ran it over the rail yard pictured above? You could have paid a healthy chunk toward a passenger rail line with the money that the city and NTTA spent greasing the skids with Union Pacific.
