...and for the first time, the word "Colonial" is not in the official name of the tournament.  For at least the next six years, it will be known as (although certainly never referred to locally) as the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.

Star Telegram: Colonial tournament lands Dean & DeLuca as title sponsor

Maybe you're as confused as I was initially.  Dean & DeLuca, apparently, is a Wichita based high-end grocery chain that currently does not have a location anywhere in Texas.

According to the FWST article, however, they do have plans to expand into Texas (and specifically, DFW, though a Fort Worth location was not specified).

Expectations are that the Clearfork/Edwards Ranch development will have a Dean & DeLuca location.

It's sad that the tournament is loosing the sponsorship funds, and that the TV ratings are down. I wasn't very keen on the name change in the first place.

I agree. I heard Colonial tried to get Toyota. But they said timing was not right. In other words no. You would think American Airlines would want to sponsor a hometown event like this ? I am not a big fan of golf. But the year before I watched on TV Spieth win the Colonial was exciting.

One article I read earlier today implied that the sponsorship was set up through the PGA. I'm not sure what role that would play in local companies sponsoring local tournaments or how that would fit with the PGA's sponsorship agreement with United Airlines.

Purely an anecdotal observation, but I heard rumblings a couple of years ago that Toyota was reluctant to jump into sponsorships and partnerships in this area prior to their actual move here (Toyota Stadium naming happened a year before the HQ announcement). I know of at least one local partnership that hasn't been announced yet that was pushed back after the initial discussions a couple of years ago.

I feel like Colonial has little to worry about as long as a sponsor lines up. It's the oldest tournament on the tour still played on its original course. That has to count for something. It will be interesting to see what the Nelson's upcoming move does to that tournament and how moving a major into May changes the schedule.

Well, since it is now "Sundance Square by Nissan" perhaps they could sponsor the Colonial as well?  Honestly, I don't know who sponsors the other tournaments but what about Nike, Titleist, Chili's or since it is the oldest tournament how about the "I've fallen and I can't up @ Colonial"?  ;-)

I would be interested in knowing exactly what the title sponsor has to commit to... Not that I am interested in applying for the position

The title sponsors has to commit to paying the purse or about $12 million a year.

Growing movement at the club to tell the PGA to go away AND stop the tour event in FW.

Why would they want a big event like this to leave this city?

I'm guessing that means the club itself feels like they can live without any income the tournament brings in.  It sounds like the PGA left the club twisting in the wind a bit with the sponsorship and I can't help but wonder if the powers that be at Colonial know that the tour is about to screw them out of their date with a major moving into May soon.

From the article:  "On Wednesday night, club officials met with the board to apprise it of where things stand."

Just think:  A professional writer wrote that, and a professional editor edited that.

When I read this article in Fort Worth Business I couldn't believe it.  A major sports venue is actually going to have the name "Fort Worth!"  But I will always know it as "The Colonial."

I was a little surprised they went with that name.  If they're able to find a title or presenting sponsor going forward, it would be nice if they find a way to keep "Fort Worth" in the name.

I guess it will be the "Charles Schwab Colonial Invitational."  Not bad.  At least it's not named after Seagram's.  Hope the sports announcers continue to acknowledge that the Colonial Golf Course is located in Fort Worth.

I have been watching the tournament some today and they have been putting quite a few nice shots of places in the city and they just had a very nice aerial of the skyline and then zoomed out to show where Colonial Country Club is located relative to downtown.  On another break, they showed the Amon Carter Museum and then cut to an aerial of the Cultural District.  They zoomed out to show Will Rogers and then further out to show the new arena construction.  This is good promotion for the city.

I didn't make a comment yesterday, but Jim Nantz mentioned that Fort Worth was the 16th largest city in the U.S.  Today, they had another promotional commercial break and he came back on and said he just read where Fort Worth had moved up to 15th place.  Then he introduced Mayor Betsy Price and he interviewed her at the 18th Hole tower.

I may be the lone outlier, however I don't think that the ranking is all that important.  After all, the combined region ranks as the 4th most populated region in the U.S.

Instead, I think that concentrating growth in the core is much more impressive than the growth at the far flung fringes that is pushing the City up the "Largest City Ladder".  More density will make the City feel much more larger than it does now.

No, you are not the lone outlier.  I have always thought we should be increasing our density, and slowing our "suburban" sprawl.  However, I have also said many times, that even if we increase our density, we should protect our existing historic resources and neighborhoods.  The inner city vacant land should be redeveloped first, then we should look to see where low density areas could be replaced without demolishing historic resources.  That should be where we start.

Glad to hear Fort Worth is getting national attention. Did they ever show our skyline?

------

Yes, metro areas are generally a better indicator of a city's size. They ignore municipal boundaries and include suburbs surrounding a city.

That's why I wish Fort Worth and Dallas were separate metro areas. That way, people would see Fort Worth as a city with suburbs, not as a suburb of another city.

Fort Worth would be the 24th largest metro area, and Dallas would be the 9th largest metro area.

To me it seems the tournament had a lot more Fort Worth flavor to it from past years. TV host were really talking up Fort Worth after commercial breaks From the Star Telegram article the Mayor did a lot to save this years event. And many of the players seem to want the Colonial to stay forever. Even though from what I read. Attendance was down due to the heat. It don't seem the Fort Worth name will remain next year. But we will see.

Four things I take from this years event. I wish Spieth had won again like he did in 2016. Kevin Na argues with his caddy openly. A little drama never hurts. lol. And I love the Fort Worth coverage as a whole this year. But if Spieth did not win . I am glad a international player Justin Rose won. After being gone from Colonial after eight years to win it. Nothing like having a international player to leave with good feelings about Fort Worth. Of course the goal is to have all players feel good after being in Fort Worth.

Lots of low hanging fruit and quality opportunity with the vacant parcels we have.

I didn't get to see a lot of coverage over the weekend, but it sure seemed like there was a lot of positivity surrounding Colonial compared to the Nelson the week before. It sounds like the new course in Dallas was a hit with the golfers, but not so much with the fans. The weather on Sunday morning did them no favors by pushing the tournament finish back to dusk.

The new name is also official: The Charles Schwab Challenge.

https://www.star-tel...e213982764.html

The article speculates that the tournament will stay with its Memorial Day weekend dates and the Nelson will move to Mother's Day weekend with the PGA Championship moving from August to the weekend between the Nelson and Colonial.

What does that mean for the Colonial then?  I mean, does anyone care about the tournament *after* the PGA Championship?  (Honest question, as I know virtually nothing about how the tourneys are constructed and arranged.... but the week after the championship sounds like the NFL Pro Bowl which no one watches).

Just pure speculation, but I would think they're a little relieved they won't be pushed into the dead part of the season after the British Open or forced to swap with the PGA Championship and get stuck with an August date.  I get the Pro Bowl comparison, but it's pretty apples-to-oranges.  The Super Bowl is the end of the season for the NFL.  The Pro Bowl is an exhibition.  The PGA still has several months of their season and 2 majors left after the PGA championship, including the US Open 3 weeks after the Colonial.  Colonial has already faced participation concerns because they are the lead in to the Memorial, a tournament that top players won't skip because it is Jack Nicklaus's tournament.  Could the new schedule compound the concerns?  Maybe, but golfers like Colonial and lot of big names have won here and tend to come back.

So is the "PGA Championship" just a particular tournament and winning it doesn't mean you're the winner of the PGA for that year, just the winner of that particular tourney?

Having never paid attention to golf, I have no sense as to whether they even have a "season" as such as in baseball or football or whatever.

It's just another one of the 4 major tournaments, the other 3 being The Masters (April), the US Open (June), and the Open Championship or the British Open (July).  Not all that different from NASCAR running what most consider the Super Bowl of their sport, the Daytona 500, on the first Sunday of the season.

I could have put this over in one of the bicycling threads, but again this year, there is going to be a Bike Valet at the Colonial.  Streams and Valleys is running this.  Bicycle transportation is probably the easiest way to get to the Colonial, and you can ride your bike to the tournament, park your bike, and have it watched while you are watching the golf.  The fee for this service is a $10 donation to Streams and Valleys.  I have done this a couple of times when I had tickets to the golf tournament.  I rode from my house a fairly short distance to Colonial, parked my bike, spent the entire afternoon watching golf, then picked up the bike, and rode a short distance to my house.  It is a fun way to get more exercise on that day.'

Here's a link to the city's coverage on their website:
