Today, David Love added a "Politics" forum to the board under "Websites and Other Things". This will be a place to say if you like the idea of adding this category as a specific area for discussion.

Also, now would be a good time to explore possibilities of adding new forum categories, if you feel we need to add any. If you think some categories should be deleted, we can also discuss that, as well. What do you think of the forum's format and what would you change. Now is the time to speak up. If the changes are easy, they may be made fairly quickly. Otherwise, they will be made in August.

I'm surprised there aren't any other suggestions for changes.

Pete, when I get through with my school project, I will take serious look at how you can upload photos directly to the forum.

I've thought of a couple options but most are way too granular and when said and done, they just seem to be just another way to organize topics. The Politics segment makes sense, only because we have multiple threads in that genera pop up on a regular basis and because elected officials often have direct influence on the architectural landscape of their area of influence.

Better Business Bureau:  A place to find or post valid complaints for auto delerships and maintenance facilities. (New Features) If you have a valid gripe about auto dealerships, this is the place to voice it.

The only downside I can see where photo uploads are concerned is hosting prices are primarily based on bandwidth and size of content and where space is concerned, photos add up fast.

Create a Restaurant Section, having food combine in with Arts and Entertainment, it gets kind of convoluted with the other threads within that section. Also it makes it look like there isn't a Restaurant/food section to the forum upon first look. It be a great way for people to acquire whats new in Fort Worth Restaurant wise and different restaurants they might know existed in around the area.

We will take the Restaurant section into consideration. Also, please take a look at other city forum sites to see how they are organized. You may get some ideas from them.

I've thought about a Foodie section, but then you have restaurants that are more pubs than restaurants, then pubs that serve food, then just pubs, clubs, dance clubs, discos, what have you. Since this is an architecture forum and just as politics and architecture go hand in hand, living, sleeping, eating, entertaining and being entertained are all the functional aspects of architecture.

We have Residential and Commercial sections within Projects and New Construction yet once built we still discuss the day to day happenings of each building, and often the re-tasking of commercial as residential and the reverse.

So maybe a section that breaks things down by use, foodie/restaurant, retail/merchandise, retail/perishables/foods, entertainment/pubs/clubs, mixed use, etc...

Eating out is a major aspect to many people lives. Just look at walmart usually you will find the exact same people at a restaurant gorging themselves either before or after walmart. For myself I eat in allot, but I still find my self at a restaurant quite often. Generally people eat out inside of a building of sorts whether historical, new, cookie cutter or just old so it does relate.

I'd like to suggest a forum for stadia, arenas, and other athletic venues. They may take a long time to build/renovate, cost a small (or large) fortune, and otherwise be a PITA; but once the job's done, they become significant parts to the municipal architecture.

I don't know... The construction process and associated issues fits nicely under "Public and Institutional" (or "Commercial" in the case of Cowboy's Stadium) and what happens afterwards fits under either "Sports and Activities" or "Arts and Entertainment".

I personally would prefer to see spectator sports separated off from sports and activities we actually do (watching a game vs. riding a bike or throwing a disk...) but there is really not the volume of postings to justify that.

Pup, you are correct. There aren't enough posts to justify splitting spectator sports from participatory sports. We tried that in the early days and it was a big failure. I might look at changing the description or title to be a little more inclusive.

I also wonder if we will have much participation on the "Politics" forum.

With elections looming, we might, but it seems to be sporadic, wonder if we could or should include city council items. I know I have a hard time actually going to the sessions, would like a place to gather the "what's happenings" and discussions.

If number of posts are a factor, maybe we should have a "Fort Worth vs Dallas" section?

Due to heavy criticism of individuals within city vs. city threads on other forums, we will never have a "Fort Worth vs. Dallas" section.

I'm all for that, was kind of just thinking out loud, I group those debates into the same category as siblings arguing over which parent is the coolest.

I think the politics section will probably have stagnate periods separated by brush fires here and there, then the once a year or once every four year bonfire.

I think quite a number of the categories could be condensed. That way each one would get far more activity.

The two historic categories in the top subsection could probably be easily merged into one category.

The "Fort Worth Architecture" category has kind of evolved into a catch-all section that includes a ton of topics that could easily go into one of the existing categories and many are duplicates of topics in other sections.

And not to sound nitpicky, but the politics section was created after someone who hadn't posted on the forum for several months (and hasn't posted since) came on and scolded everyone for posting about politics. As best I could tell, the threads were all on-topic and had remained pretty civil. I guess it's all good in the end, but the reasoning behind it seemed like a knee jerk reaction at best.

Yes, I have noticed that the Fort Worth Architecture section gets a lot of posts that really belong in other categories My original intent was to move a thread out of the Projects and New Construction subsection into the Fort Worth Architecture once the building is completed. That would leave any of the categories within Projects and New Construction devoted completely to what the subsection describes. One of these days, I may move all of the topics to the proper category. However, if I did that, no one would be able to find the topics.

When posting a new thread, please think about posting in the correct area on the board. There have been several posts recently in the Fort Worth Architecture section that really do not belong there.

How about a crap section. All the bad posts can be moved over there for others to read and laugh. Lock The section so its a read only.

There won't be a "crap" section of this forum. Even if it is read only, I don't feel there is a real need for this. Also, I did look at merging the two "Historic" sections under architecture. However, they are really two distinct items. One is to discuss existing historic preservation topics, and the other is to discuss "Local History" and buildings that are no longer with us. They each have a good number of posts. Right now, they will stay the same.

I don't like the look of the FW forum home page for the site. It seems to be all about IP Board, whatever that is. I miss the old photo of the skyline splashed across the top of the screen. I think this is one reason that there does not seem to be as much activity on the site as there was just a few years ago. Last topics go untouched for weeks or months at a time. It did not used to be that way. Where are all the passionate urbanistas that are found on other similar sites? Half the topics here seem to be about long ago drive in theaters or shopping centers. These are valid topics, but something seems to be missing. That is just my take on this site. I think "Politics" should be about local issues and players for the most part. Otherwise it is going to be flame city going into the 2012 election season.

The forum can always use a spruce up, just takes time and energy, both of which are in limited supply of late.

The forum filled a gap during its peak usage, when I started following it, I think in the late 90's it was absolutely the ONLY place where you could find any information on living downtown, lofts, condos, buildings that contained them. I must have lurked for a year or two before I started whining about ZERO options to purchase a residence downtown. At that specific point in time I had a Nokia phone swiveling on my belt, along with a pager the size of a digital camera and paying $125.00 a month for an ISDN connection, that's a 128K modem, which eventually turned into a fractal T1.

Fast forward to today, 2 of my three cell phones have a faster connection than my fractal T1 line did, many of the original forum contributors have their own blogs where they discuss their key interests, take Fortworthology for instance. Today, people can follow their favorite news, friends, stalking interests, etc... via FaceBook, Twitter, Google+, whatever their favorite news aggregation of choice may be.

What I see happening today, is less traffic, less noise for the most part, but many of the items vetted on the forum now become the source, sometimes just the muse for articles that wind up finding their way to the same people that use to discuss them in real time, they now read about them a few days later via their news feed of choice, probably due to the same lack of time and energy most of us deal with today.

It's only a matter of time before the early days of the Fort Worth Architecture Forum will become the heading of a nostalgia thread.

Austlar, the IPB Board Banner is a result of a forum upgrade. Every time we do an upgrade the "Fort Worth Forum" Banner disappears. On the last upgrade, I was going to re-do it, but I haven't gotten around to it. I do doubt that is the reason forum traffic is down. David's assessment is very accurate. Also, one reason for the lack of activity is that there really aren't any major construction projects going on right now, other than the addition to Amon Carter Stadium. I'm partially responsible for the slowdown also because I am now working much, much more that I used to. Our office has staffed down to where I have to do everything and stay later to get the projects out. Our office is now running as a very lean and mean machine. I'm very lucky that I still have a job. The second reason for the lack of work on the site is that in order to relieve stress, I started bicycling much more that I used to do. I have lost some weight and I feel much better than I did when I worked on a computer from 8 until 5 and then came home and worked on the web site and the forum. Since I have been cycling 5,000 miles per year or more, I have really been feeling great. From time to time, my interests change focus, but they are always still there. I just returned from a four day, 200 mile, bike tour through the Davis Mountains. I had already planned to work on the site more this fall, if work eased up, and I hope that I can do that. All that I ask, is just to please be patient.

I really was not trying to be critical. I actually don't visit the site very much because I don't live in FW. I just grew up there a zillion years ago and have my memories mostly. I spend a lot of time on Skycraperpage on the Austin boards and in various other locales of interest on SSP. There is much less participation on the Austin threads since most of the new construction downtown is now finished. There are about a dozen regular participants unless there is something new or controversial being discussed. I guess I am not up to speed on the new hand held technologies and probably never will be, but I used to enjoy the give and take (which was mostly civil) that used to be found in various discussions on the FW forum when these other options were not yet so popular. I think something that might prove interesting would be a "neighborhoods" section where people can start or participate in threads regarding various parts of town and what makes them interesting or not so interesting as the case may be. Thanks, John, for your hard work. Keep riding that bike. You must be in awesome shape to do 200 miles anywhere in Texas during this particular summer!

The Houston Architecture Forum has a neighborhoods section. I just wonder if it would be popular here and I also think it would duplicate some of the other categories for construction projects. I don't know how you would differentiate a "Downtown" section from "Projects and New Construction". On the other hand, neighborhoods like Berkeley, Mistletoe Heights, or Meadowbrook don't change much. Therefore, there might be duplication in "Historic Buildings and Preservation, even though many older neighborhoods are not designated as historic.

I also appreciate everyone's comments and I know that all of you are not trying to be critical.

The one good thing about these boards, is that if a category or forum section doesn't work, then the threads can be moved to other locations within the board.

Since work pressures have eased up, and I took my trip to Fort Davis, I have been more interested in working on the site. Over the weekend, I switched several building pages over to the new format and added one photograph of the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Exhibits Hall. I'm going to try my best to budget enough time to switch one building per day to the new format and to update that page. Since the Cultural District is small and it has most of the new construction, I've decided to attack that area first.

I was thinking about neighborhoods as well. I have a couple of ideas to share, not sure if they are worth implementing, more like jumping off points for discussion. First, the City website has several categories under its Planning and Development section, including Urban Design Districts and Urban Villages. Those two sections encompass most of the neighborhoods where stuff is "happening" or where there is significant history to discuss. They are not all-inclusive, tough.

The other thought I had was to maybe have a Neighborhoods forum that would encompass all neighborhood-specific discussions. When a topic is started in this section, maybe have a check box to select the specific neighborhood which would be inserted into the name, then the topic starter could add their own title (something like "[Fairmount] New book store"). Then have a pinned thread that has searches on each neighborhood (i.e., looks for "[Fairmount]" in thread titles) to show just threads for that neighborhood).

That way, there wouldn't necessarily be "dead" subforums for neighborhoods that don't have a lot going on.

I'm not sure how hard would be to write the code to insert neighborhood text labels into the thread titles.

What I've noticed is due to our search engine it's very difficult to relocate a topic after it's set idle for some time, and as time goes by topics change from planned to new construction to neighborhood. If we had a flatter structure you'd have to page down through categories until you stumbled upon your topic, a taller structure and you'd be dependent on a reliable search feature. On occasion I've utilized Google's SiteSearch: http://www.google.com/sitesearch think we may want to incorporate it into the forum...?

I'm already using the free version of Google's Site Search as the search engine on the main site. If you search there, it also throws out Fort Worth Forum entries. I'm betting that I could the code into the forum and it would work. I also tested it out vs. the sample search on the link you provided, and they produced the same results.

Ghost Ads and Ghost Signs: I saw this idea on another website (lileks.com) where he has a collection of long forgotten advertisements and signs from other citites that are still somewhat visible today. I thought it would be nice to have a collection of Fort Worth ghost signs.

Wouldn't this Ghost Signs and Such be just a thread instead of a whole forum category?

How about a Business Section?

Retail, Wholesale, companies moving to Fort Worth, companies thinking of moving to Fort Worth, companies that should move to Fort Worth, lists of companies in Fort Worth.

Restaurants, Pubs, Clubs, Bars, Taverns...

Companies you should visit, companies you'd be better off not visiting.

...just thinking out loud here.

I have added and updated more Cultural District buildings on the main site. You can check out a list of the updates at the www.fortwortharchitecture.com entry page.

I haven't reported on the web statistics in a very long time. The site is averaging 36,000 unique visitors per month during 2011. The most popular part of the site is the forum. The individual page with the most hits is The Water Gardens.

A suggestion has been made recently to start a section on Mid-Century Modern Architecture. What do you think?

There's a lot of GOOD mid (20th)century modern architecture in Fort Worth so why not?

If I add it, it will be a sub-forum under Historic Buildings and Preservation. That keeps it within the main forum sections, yet separates it away from other historic buildings.

How about city specific category's. Like BenBrook, Hulen, North Richland, etc sections. This would help bring topics closer to there area and maybe easier to find first hand.

How about a Bicycling forum? I think most cycling topics end up under Professional Sports and Recreational Activities, but cycling is more than recreation. It can also fall under Transportation, but I think there are several of us who would contribute to a Bicycling forum.

At one time, there was a separate forum category for bicycling. It had very little activity. However, that was before the Bike Fort Worth Plan was adopted.

As for separate cities, I looked at all of the previous posts in Surrounding Cities and there are only a handful of topics for each town, other than Fort Worth. I'm not real sure any of these topics would have much activity.

A second for a Bicycling category. I'd like a place where I can post after I get back from a new route or destination, to share my experience.

A complete coincidence that as you were writing those words I was thinking of starting a generic bicycle thread. I had a bicycle post that I tagged on to Bike Date. Pretty crazy timing. Exactly the same time I was thinking what you were thinking.

I rode down your street a few times this past week. One of these days we will meet. I also rode by John when he was out watering in his yard last week. It's kind of exciting changing up the routes once in a while, especially when you might run across someone you know. :roflol:
