Excerpted from the Handbook of Texas Online:

Montague, the county seat of Montague County, was established in 1858 and named for Daniel Montague, a pioneer land surveyor and state senator. A post office opened in 1860 and by 1880 the community provided the only flour and grist mills for county farmers. Between 1880 and 1900 the tracks of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway were built through Bowie to the south of Montague, and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad reached Nocona to the north. In 1886 W. A. Morris and C. C. White attempted to save the county seat from isolation by construction of an independent rail line named the Weatherford and Great Northwestern, connecting Bowie with Montague. Approximately eight miles of tracks were laid before funds ran out. The population was 300 in 1915 and 284 in 1947. Afterward the population leveled off and, beginning in the 1970s, the community started to grow again. In 1990 the population was 400.

I don't think they've had their "unsustainable boom" yet. Unless you consider the cotton ginning prior to the arrival of the railroads in nearby cities. That would be fun, though to compare Montague with Waco, Midland and Tulsa just to hack off the Tulsans-come-lately. smile.gif

I'm wondering how many people noticed the blue "Thank you for smoking" sticker underneath the pig rental notice.

Much to my shock and dismay this morning, I found out there are no gas stations in Montague - at least none that I could find (and it's not that hard to check the whole city in just a few minutes). The closest was about 5-6 miles back towards Bowie.

The only time I ever went through Montague I was rather surprised myself. There is a town but it almost seems as if the courthouse just pops up out of the prairie. Just like your first two pictures. Thanks for the view Andy! Don't get to see many pictures of this place!

Interesting photos thanks for sharing. Doesn't look like there is much history there what a disappointment. Is this all the pix you shots of this town?

No historical marker either?
If you have more please post them
Thanks so much
