Lighting the Grain Silos/Purina Plant

Maybe even lighting for the Purina mill and silo on the east side of downtown.
Speirs and Major just did a nice job lighting Bethlehem Steel's blast furnaces for the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, PA.
Speirs and Major
A nice way to turn industrial rustbelt into an architectural attraction.

Could NOT agree more. It would make the largest difference possible to Downtown. A more positive difference then a great new skyscraper, in my opinion. A big enough difference that I think there should be external funding for it. Doesn't seem like it would cost more than a few thousand dollars, too. For the City, it would turn a depressing void into a lively statement. Would take any color. Whichever is most visible. Seems like red, to me.
Just got a new computer setup and need to repurchase Photoshop or I would make a quick "before and after with and without lighting" of the Purnina Mills complex near downtown.
Besides Photoshop, I lost my spell check program on my previous computer. So stand by for some laughs. (laffs?)

A lot of people have previously complained on the board that the mill is an eyesore. I disagree - I actually find it very fascinating in a certain way. In this part of the country, the sort of vintage industrial look the place has is rather rare and a bit of a novelty. I think it is kind of cool (though I probably would feel differently if I were from a different part of the country.)

Plus, demolition would probably be cost prohibitive given the inherent limitations on land re-use. It's a lemon, let's make some lemonade.

It would turn an architectural eyesore into a piece of post-industrial art.
There Parks saw for the first time a series of former blast furnaces decoratively lit as the centerpiece of a tourist attraction. Immediately, Bethlehem Steel’s five former blast furnaces went to the top of his interest list.
“I didn’t really see the beauty of them until I saw them illuminated in Germany,” Parks said. “What occurred to me there is no one is ever going to build structures like this again in the United States.”

WOW! That test was massively cool. Reminds me of the technology used to project images onto Buckingham Palace during the concert for the Queen's most recent jubilee. I would like to see something like that demonstrated locally up by you in Saginaw at the BIG grain elevators on 287.

How about turning the Purina Mills plant into a 'green mountain' ?

Watch this 400-foot-tall gas tank become an insane light show

LWA architects has an interesting solution to disguising industrial machinery of a chilled water plant
Perforated metal screen for the top volume and semi glazed frit for the bottom.

I can see a lot of uses for that, screening HVAC on rooftops, as a facade for parking garages, etc.

Turning lemons into lemonade: Unsightly grain elevators in the redeveloping waterfront area? Use them as canvases for night time light shows.

I would be happy if they just painted the one by my company here on Beach St.

Granville Island in Vancouver (which has suppossedly inspired a lot of Panther Island's design) has a neat painted silo complex.

Omaha also is somewhat famous for its painted silos.

Nice ideas--I wonder if Purina would allow that or just put up pictures of dogs and cats? Anything is better than the eyesores that are there now.

Ran across this on Reddit this morning. Something like this would be a fantastic advertisement leading up to the Main St. Arts festival.

Anything labeled Magnolia referring to Chip and Joanna just makes me gag from the excessive cute. Still, like all their stuff, I like it.
Drove from Fort Worth to Austin early this beautiful morning. Arrived in Waco around 9:30 and decided to visit the Chip and Joanna silo compound. At that early hour, the lines for the cupcakes snaked outside the door like a popular ride at Six Flags. The other parts of the compound were also quite crowded. The streets around were closed off to car traffic and the police were everywhere. It appeared they were anticipating very large crowds today. I saw license plates from all over the country in the parking lot. An entire extended family from Michigan stood in front of me in the cupcake line. They were hilarious. They drove down just to see the Gaines's silos. The lady who waited on me moved to Waco from New Mexico after retirement just to be able to work at the silo compound. What a phenomenon! BTW, the carrot cake cupcake and bacon/cheese biscuit were delicious!

LCD Tourism. People are having a difficult separating "real" reality from the TV version. This is, I suppose, an updated version of the Southfork Ranch phenomenon the North-of-Dallas area enjoyed many years ago.
