I did a 35 mile ride around the city on Friday. I wrote up the whole ride in my blog (it's pretty long) but I thought I would post a few pictures here.

Ah - Piggly Wiggly! Haven't seen one of those outside Alabama! Great pictures!

Yeah, it really caught my eye when I first saw the building.

Really excellent shots alright. I really enjoyed them. Very interesting perspective of the train station. We mostly see pictures of people's butts waiting for the train.

The shot with your bike by the cemetery entrance is kind of funny. It looks like that massive chain is connecting your bike to the gate. (a bit of over-kill)

That's what I like about riding a bike- you get a different perspective of the city. A few pics from our Night Riders Sunday pub crawl this week-

Rogers Road under the train tracks near Davidson Yard. Ostensibly a two-way street.

Doohickie your pictures are wicked, I have always wanted to do a photo journey from the 350Z... also, I freakin love Malone's! That may be the best kept secret in all of Fort Worth, I love that place! The jukebox is perhaps the best in all of Tarrant. High Lifes are cheap, times are good. Do you guys go there often?

It's one of the regular stops for the Night Riders on our Sunday pub crawl ride. This past week, Ed who owns Malone's rode with us. Very cool. Fritz Rahr has ridden with us once or twice as well.

You bring the bikes inside the bar?

Depends on the bar. We usually leave them outside, but some bars are more bike friendly than others. The owner of Malone's rode with us that night so obviously he's pretty bike friendly (although he personally just put his bike on the rack on his car out front). Tiff and Andy's on Bluebonnet Circle also lets us bring the bikes in. Most of the time, though, we leave them outside.

Last night was a howler- strong wind out of the south. Great for me riding to the meetup point. Fairly neutral the ride which had a lot of east-west to it. A royal pain the arse riding home the 8.5 miles at the end. Luckily it was quite warm though.

Did a 41 miler on Friday. The destination was the waterfall at the River Oaks end of the trail.

On the way up: The old water treatment (?) plant just north of downtown. Can anyone confirm that it is a water treatment plant and whether it is still used? (Or is/was it a power plant?) Anyway, I think it's a cool building.

The trail is a little different going northwest, compared with the southwest branch that heads toward Benbrook. The trail is crushed stone and typically runs on the top of the levy. It makes it better for people who want to run their dogs without a leash in that they can run at the base of the levy next to the river and the dogs are not drawn to cyclists/pedestrians on top of the levy.

A couple shots taken at the falls.

Coming back I took Roaring Springs Road, then went to the top of West 7th Street (its western end). Roaring Springs is safer than this picture makes it appear; even though heavy trucks use the road, the single marked lane is really about two lanes wide.
Posted Image

I love the view coming down West 7th.

I had lunch at the new Fort Worth Food Park. It was surprisingly crowded.

I believe the building in the first shot is an old power plant - I was out taking pictures of it Saturday. I think Brian has mentioned that the stacks came down sometime back, and referred to it as a power plant...

Now that you mention it, I think I remember smokestacks too. If you look at the Google aerial view, though, you can see several holding tanks (or some kind of round objects) as well as a water intake/exhaust along the river. Maybe the building warrants its own thread (or maybe it already has one).

It is the old North Fort Worth Power Plant (1912). I didn't realize it, but the building is 100 years old this year. The smokestacks were imploded shortly before Tarrant County College took possession of the property. I believe there is a thread on the building. It may be called the TXU Power Plant in that thread. At one time, it did have some holding tanks and a water intake station.

I saw those round things by the river as well, and in my completely ignorant mind I assumed they were bases for the old smokestacks, but this was purely a guess from a brain that was near frozen by that point (it was COLD on that bridge Saturday morning!). Anyone know what they are? You can just catch a glimpse at the left edge of this picture I took Saturday:

Did 32 miles on the fixie last night, to downtown and back using a very circuitous route. This spot (Jennings, just north of the tunnel) I think of as looking at the shoulders of the city skyline from behind; it's a neat view, but it's not the one you see on the post cards.

I rode the fixed gear bike 24 miles last night, out to TCC River Campus East (or whatever it's called). Got a nice pic of the courthouse too.

The ride out was wonderful. My legs were really churning. About the time I got to downtown, the reason for that dawned on me..... and then I had to turn around and ride into the headwind that had been pushing me. I made it home, though, so it's all good.

Last night was Critical Mass.  The idea of Critical Mass is to get enough bicycles traveling in a group that cars *have* to give the cyclists the right of way. Between the holidays and the chilly weather, I can't say our group of 10 was large enough to achieve that objective. We had a good time, though.

Doohickie, I've heard of various bike groups and have seen them ride past my old job. Where can I get some info about joining up? It looks like fun.

NSFW, what kind of cycling do you want to do?  There are various groups in the city, and some cater to different types of riders.

The night rides seem like fun. Just a bit curious is all. I tend do my bike rides along the Trinity Trails. On the rare occasion I'll go to the trail in Weatherford for a little off road biking.

The Night Riders have a group on Facebook.  If you're on FB, check them out.  If not, let me know and I can give you more info.

Right now?  6.  None of them are all that, really.  The old black Raleigh 3-speed is probably the rarest.  When I get bored I switch bikes.  They were all acquired pretty cheaply.  I'm kind of a collector, but I also have odd tastes.
