Was doing some research on Hedrick buildings outside of Fort Worth and ran across this stunning building. Wow! Had never seen this.

In 1926,  plans were unveiled for a massive forty-story hotel in Houston, TX for Ross S. Sterling,  founder of Humble Oil Company (which later became Exxon-Mobile).

The building was tentatively called the “Sterling Hotel.”  If it had been built, the building would have been “the largest hotel building in the South.”

While the building was never built, Ross Sterling went on to become Governor of Texas for two years from 1931-1933.

This design was  rendered by prominent Fort Worth Architect Wyatt C. Hedrick, who also happened to be Ross Sterling’s son-in-law.

Hedrick and hotel man T.B. Baker worked together closely (Hedrick also designed the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells and the Stephen F. Austin in Austin), and some information suggests that, if built, the Sterling would have been operated by the Baker Corporation.

Very nice. I would be interested in seeing images of some of his work outside of Fort Worth (do my Googling for me!).

I changed the name of the topic, would be interesting to learn more about Hedrick.

I was originally looking to see what buildings he had done in Lubbock, as I am out here visiting family currently. A few buildings at Texas Tech as well as the Fort Worth & Denver South Plains station south of downtown Lubbock.

The Baker Hotel is another great example not far from FW that many of us are familiar with.

WIkipedia has a nice list - https://en.wikipedia...yatt_C._Hedrick

Austin, most major Texas cities had or has at least one Wyatt Hedrick Building.  You can search Architecture in Fort Worth for the buildings that he did here.

Another favorite is the Sterick Building in Memphis... Been abandoned for years. At one point the tallest building in the South. I'd guess the tallest existing Hedrick building to.

Maybe if Memphis isn't doing anything with it we could borrow it?   :smwink:

Shame it's abandoned - that's a beautiful building. It must be the Memphis version of the T&P Warehouse.

We have enough vacant decaying buildings of our own.

The original picture in this post broke, but I've updated it.

There's also a good black and white rendering on Flickr here: https://www.flickr.c...N08/5355650858/

(The Sterick Building talk here got me thinking about the Sterling again)
