I was just driving home on 820 from work and I glanced over at the CBS11 billboard near the Trinity exit when I noticed something different... The Dallas skyline has been replaced by a new photo of the Fort Worth skyline proudly showing the glowing crown of the tower. It also said something like "News That Tarrant County Can Count on". I was shocked! wub.gif

I saw a similar billboard while I was driving this week and I was going to comment on that, also. Do you think someone from Channel 11 reads the forum? Or do you just think they had a lot of complaints?

I think maybe a little of both. I used to e-mail/call/fax hosts and management all the time. ph34r.gif In fact, I ran into a certain midday host who grew up in Fort Worth (it an easy guess) at a sports banquet and really let him have it. ph34r.gif

They can use the "Tarrant County" stuff in Grapevine or Arlington.

Good. Because I'm sure that person has a lot of say in what goes on their billboards.

I know which billboard that is... However, this is one of the few instances that you can't blame (sa based)
Clear Channel for doing something stupid. The space was paid for by a Dallas company and it is only visible to those exiting D/FW airport from the south who take the wrong exit (i.e. Dallas Irving). I am sure that it is visible from Airport Freeway but the majority seeing it are heading east from the airport to "Not So Big D". rotflmao.gif

You can't...wait I'm sure you all can imagine the comments I'm getting from people when they find out we are moving to Fort Worth (yeah yeah yeah, the sign says Keller, but we are in Fort Worth and get all FW city services).

1. Oh, that's neat..do you have relatives in Dallas? Why yes I do and when I feel like driving 30 miles, I'll go see them.

2. Dallas Fort Worth...same thing

3. Oh you'll love Dallas.

4. Didn't you used to live in Dallas? No I lived in Fort Worth. See #2

5. Oooh I hate that Dallas airport. Well I do too, but I love DFW

But the worst thing of all...every freaking station down here and even the national ones when they do a story from Fort Worth, they always sign off with...Dick Talking Head, Dallas. Arrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh

My friends in New York are well versed on the differences between Fort Worth and Dallas. I think Fort Worth needs to start marketing itself as more than a cowtown with culture and start to think big. Oakland, San Jose, Saint Paul, and Baltimore have similar issues.

Star-T . In the THE INSIDER Section .

Playing Hardball'
U.S. Rep.Michael Burgess
R- Flower Mound, got in a pitch for
the home crowd with talkmeister
Chris Mattews on MSNBC's
Hardball.
Burgess, who appeared on the
program in a Texas special with
Rep.Sheila Jackson Lee,D -Houston,
was introduced as being in "Dallas"
Burgess promptly interrupted.
"Hey ,Chris, actually,I'm in Fort
Worth."
Mattews responded,"OK,
you're in Fort Worth. Well,you
know what, they got it wrong, but
you're in Fort Worth. You know
where you are,at least."
Added Burgess, "Beautiful
downtown Fort Worth."
"Nice plug." Mattews said.

IM going to call and thank his office for this! This made me happy! tongue.gif [font=Arial]

Good for Michael Burgess! Here is the actual transcript:

We‘ll talk to two U.S. Congresspeople from Texas. You‘re watching HARDBALL on MSNBC.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(STOCK MARKET REPORT)

MATTHEWS: Welcome back to HARDBALL. We‘re in Houston, Texas tonight for our first stop on the road for decision 2006. It‘s Tom DeLay‘s neck of the weeds, where the former House majority leader might have a re-election race on his hands. We‘re joined now by two members of the Texas delegation to Washington, Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in Houston, that‘s her district, and Republican Michael Burgess, who‘s in Dallas, his hometown. Welcome both of you congresspeople. I want to go to Sheila Jackson Lee. Congressman Lee, what do you think of Tom DeLay‘s...

REP. MICHAEL BURGESS ®, TEXAS: Hey, Chris, actually, I‘m in Ft.

Worth.

MATTHEWS: OK, you‘re in Ft. Worth. Well, you know what, they got it wrong, but you‘re in Ft. Worth. You know where you are, at least.

BURGESS: Beautiful downtown Ft. Worth.

MATTHEWS: Nice plug. Let‘s go to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Congresswoman, do you think Tom DeLay has a fight on his hands or is he fairly safe?

Darnit! If it's the one about Texas (not sure if it was 1 day) with the Strayhorn interview (Press Sec. Scott Mclellands Mother). I watched that re-aired program about a week ago and must have slept through the second half of it. That Strayhorn chick is such a BOOB.

She's about as fake as a "F"ouis Vouitton in Chinatown.
Independent ticket my ARSE!
Couldn't get a word about why she is running against her old party. Very suspicious. dry.gif

Well, I will certainly write to that Rep. as well. chris Matthews should know better. Kinky Friedman would have been a MUCH better interview anyways. Great job BURGESS!

In fact, if Chris Matthews is reading this. I invite him to ole Fort Worth, TX and take in a steak dinner or two. Perhaps an IRISH pub to wind down in. wink.gif

A rising star in the Bush family dynasty will soon be calling Cowtown home.

George P. Bush -- the son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his wife, Columba -- shocked the local political establishment on Monday by announcing that he and his wife would be moving to Fort Worth from Dallas.

Bush, the nephew of President Bush, dropped his bombshell in front of about 150 people attending a fund-raiser at the City Club for the National Republican Congressional Committee that was hosted by U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth.

Bush is an attorney at the Dallas law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. His wife, Amanda Williams Bush, is an attorney at Jackson Walker in Fort Worth.

It's not clear whether Bush plans to leave Akin, Gump once he moves west. There is speculation that Bush, a former clerk for U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater, may leave the practice of law to work for a financial firm. He specializes in corporate and securities and investment funds, according to the Akin, Gump Web site.

Bush has been touted as a likely political contender and has made several high-profile appearances for the GOP at Latino rallies.

Besides, it's Asian, not Oriental. That best desribes a rug, furnishings or food genre.

I can see some ladies thinking that he is handsome, in a Ricky Ricardo kinda way. biggrin.gif

But compared to the REST of the family, minus Jenna and the Barbara (TWINS!) biggrin.gif , he is very very handsome then.

Safly your going off the deep end again. (Cowboy Stadium remember.) Take a deep breath. Remember your brought up the "Brown one" talk . Not me. That story was over 10 years ago ! I think I would know if was Bush Sr said was anti-Mexican . Me and my family co-workers were not taken aback by what he said. We are BROWN! Much ado about nothing .

I can now go by what you said . And spin it to be anti-Hispanic. So your on the left you can't be objective. Fine O.K. Lighten up. As for myself I always voted Republican . As many Hispanics I know do also. 08 may be my first time voting Democratic. I always lean right . But for me I don't trust any party anymore. And both are nothing but a lot of hot air. mad.gif

Very very TRUE. I too have nephews who are half Polish and half African American. I still would NEVER EVER refer to them, ESPECIALLY to the national press as "black one" or "white one", or blackie or whitie or half and half or something else that is disrespectful. He should have said my grandson, or Jeb's son, or the grandson that is hispanic. Even though the FBI classified hispanics as Caucasian or White for so many years. Ridiculous. Maybe that is the differenc between N.Texas Hispanics and S.Texas Hispanics. A matter of assimilation and introspective thought. Does make a difference to many others. Especially during those times, really trying and growing times for hispanics in America, it was seen as disrespectful. I thougth it was more funny(at age 12?), as in showing the true ignorance of the family patriarch. Who happens to be a carpet bagging YANKEE. It's true. biggrin.gif

Really? I never hear that. About 75% of the time I find that people (reasonably well traveled ones anyway) are geographically literate and know where the city is. However, the fact that our airport boasts both cities' names confuses people and they assume its really one "place" - therefore they abbreviate the four syllable name to two: Dallas.

Typically this is just a misunderstanding and once people are made aware of the fact that such an abbreviation is A) inaccurate and B) insulting, they won't make the mistake again.

When people from Dallas make the mistake it is particularly obnoxious (or says a lot about their understanding of their immediate geographic region) as it implies a greater "net" in which Dallas can claim (world revolves around whereever they live) - it is unfortunately in the personality of that town to grow its sphere of influence and many Dallas promoters would love to claim Fort Worth's assets (businesses, cultural institutions) as their own (sounds much better to the outside world).

I also hear that Dallas population is 7 million. So as rantanomo shows Dallas does not lose when wrong info is given. I hear that the new IKEA store in Frisco was opened it has a clause that says no mention of Dallas is to be made in advertisment.

Thats what all cities outside Dallas needs to do.

Speaking of CBS11 and the FW Skyline, I noticed on their graphocs on the morning news it shows a white silohette of both the FW (on the left) and Dallas (on the right) skyline. Interestingly enough, the FW skyline still depicts the CNB clock!

biggrin.gif Man, too much to reply to. I will say this, CBS had to do it they are here in Fort Worth, and it was hard at first with the way The Bank One(The Tower) stood out with the boarded widows.
To also reply about our suburbs suchas NRH, HEB and Arlington, how could you not expect them to say they live in Dallas, when we are not taking leadership. I mean what happened to being called "Fort Worth Star Telegram". Things are changing though. I saw a report on ABC 8(Dallas-based, mind you) that within 15 years, Fort Worth will be the dominate side of the metroplex. So to our suburbs that wish they were apart of Dallas, take that with you to Dallas. tongue.gif

i've only said "i'm from dallas" once, and that was in barcelona when i was sketching a gaudi house and a swarm of catalan schoolkids formed around me. once they found out i spoke english (their english teacher was taking them on a field trip) they started peppering me with every english question imaginable.

one kid who was obviously a bit of a bully pushed his way to the front of the swarm. "are you from england?" he asked.

"no, i'm from america...i'm from texas"

"where in texas?"

then like when ralphie in "a christmas story" throws down the queen of all curse words...i said the unthinkable...

"i'm....frommmmm.....daaaaallllllaaaaassssss...."

of course i expected the inevitable "who shot JR?" quip. but what came out was incredibly unexpected.

"the dallas cowboys kick a--!"

i stood up, shook his hand, and immediately named him and his whole class honorary texans. and then i corrected myself.

"well, actually, i'm from fort worth." which was still a little untrue, i grew up in haltom city.

In channel 4's new music-video like promo they show a lot more of the Dallas skyline, than FW's. But interestingly, one of the most prominent FW buildings shown in the ad is Landmark Tower. A helicopter flys right in front of it.
