Coca-Cola announced it was going to stop making Vanilla Coke after the first of the year. They also announced they were introducing a new flavor to compete with Dr Pepper called Black Cherry Vanilla Coke. They also stated they were discontinuing sales of Diet Coke with Lemon. What do you think about the changes?

I don't drink diet drinks. I've tried all of them, but generally don't care for them. My soft drink of choice is Dr Pepper. However, I generally prefer tea over the soft drinks or coffee.

What an odd topic for the Forum, John. . .

In any case: Never liked coke, or pepsi, or any of their flavored varieties. My favorite soft drinks are Journey's root beer and cream soda, Virgil's root beer, and D&G's ginger beer. Dr. Pepper is a distant 4th. Squirt is alright too, but what a terrible name.

I pretty much only drink water now when I'm eating out, it's free and satisfying, but I prefer Coke to the other soda brands out there on the rare occasion I do drink a soda. I liked Vanilla Coke, personally, but I knew a lot of people who thought it was weird. Oh well, that Cherry/Vanilla stuff is pretty good too, and I suppose I'll drink it.

Favorite beverage would have to be coffee though. Can't get enough of that stuff. Milk comes in a close second.

It is kind of a strange thread, but we could sure use some more diversions around here, seeing as how not a lot of interesting stuff is going on in Fort Worth. rollwink.gif

I've been trying to ween myself off of sodas, so I've been drinking tea alot more. My soda of choice is coke, but I also have an affection for Mr. Pibb. Mr. Pibb really taste great when it's really cold. Also, this post is a nice diversion and like Johnny said, there's not really much to talk about in FW right now. I've noticed the posts are getting fewer. I'm waiting on another FW highrise to be built so you guys can stop talking about that horribly mediocre Tower. But if you guys to want something to talk about visit us over here in Big D on the Dallas forum. There's a ton of developments to discuss. OOOOh Slap me!!!!...I'm so baad!!!!!!

Yes, this is an odd topic for the forum. However, I was a little surprised when I read the article on the front page of the business section. Vanilla Coke came on to the market with a lot of fanfare. I just thought it would hang around, even though I really didn't care for it. Things are slow here on the forum, so I thought it would be interesting to see how our personal tastes run.

I guess we need to go back and speculate what is going to take the place of the Landmark Tower. Has anyone heard any juicy information on the Convention Center Hotel? If so, please post in the appropriate threads.

My personal fave soda... FAYGO! Too bad the soda company from Detroit sells it ONLY at Fiesta down here in TX cry.gif

Glad Jonny and vjackson said it first, "Nothing much going on in Fort Worth right now". I thought it was just me thinking that. I get so bored seeing the same topics get disscussed over and over and over and over and over and over again wacko.gif

Houston's forum has a section called "Other" and two sections of it called "Off Topic" and "Way Off Topic" that you can discuss things that doesn't even have to do with the city at all. Something like this post John did would be typical on it. How about something like that here on the Fort Worth forum? It's something to post on when FW goes through this "nothing to talk about" dry spell. Speaking of dry, I'm thirsty, gotta go get a SODA! tongue.gif

Well, this is in the Miscellaneous section. The description of the section reads, "For anything that doesn't fit in the above categories." I think this section is appropriate for anything that is off topic.

When I get a soft drink, it's usually after a night of drinking, and then I lean toward a 50/50 mix of Pepsi and Mountain Dew. I do like Coca Cola with a lemon wedge, but never diet coke. I wonder if they've tried to bottle salted peanut flavored Coke.

I remember really liking cherry Dr. Pepper when I was a kid.

I've tried weening myself off of sodas and it is extremely difficult. I've cut back a lot, but I still drink 2-3 a day. My soda of choice is Dr. Pepper, but I'll drink just about anything other than Mountain Dew. I thought Vanilla Coke was decent and I really like Cherry Vanilla DP. The diet version of CVDP is the only diet drink I can stand.

I've recently liked drinking Cherry Coke from the fountain, but it is hard to find. I'm looking forward to Cherry Vanilla Coke.

I agree, lets keep our Misc. forum just the way it is. As I understand it, the Houston section called "Way Off Topic" is for discussions pertaining to things like religion and eithics, issues that I think would be in this forum's best interest to stay away from completely.

I guess Diet Coke with Lemon doesn't have a lot of fans here. newlaugh.gif

I prefer “Mexican” or “Puerto Rican” Coca-Cola; it’s made with pure cane sugar, you can also get the same flavor in Passover Coke but it’s only sold in certain markets. I've heard that Kosher Coke in 2 ltr bottles have yellow caps instead of white or red.

Anyone know where you can get the pure cane variety around here? I’ve only found it at a couple online sites and it runs about a buck a bottle.

Switch to Dr. Pepper and you can be drinking pure cane all the time with the products from the first Dr. Pepper bottling franchise in Dublin, Texas.

I've heard some health conspiracy theorists say that corn syrup is worse for you than cane sugar. Don't know if I believe that, but I do know the corn syrup mutes the true taste of the drinks. You can really taste the fruit flavors in Dr. Pepper when it is made with cane sugar (and no, not prunes).

I can look a DFW distributor up for you. We sell that variety at our restaurant, medio litre for $1.79. DOES TASTE GREAT!

May want to try an "old reliable" though. A CARNIVAL store. wink.gif

Has anyone here ever drink an "Orange BANG!"? TO DIE FOR. I like Horchata drinks too (which we sell), especially over VODKA or RUM. Ehh, hemm. Both of which are from very distinctive, ehhh, architectually pleasing ehh, national centers for their ehhh respective cultural studies. biggrin.gif

Does Carnival carry the Kosher variety or south of the border brand? It’s hard to tell which is which since the ingredients generally doesn’t mention anything about cane sugar.

If you’re looking for odd ball types of sodas check out this site:

I have to admit to being pretty much a diet Coke-aholic. My absolute favorite right now is the diet Coke with Lime - Man that's good when it's hot. And if you mix it with rum, you're set! The Lime one is the only flavor additive I thought tasted right, y'know, not completely artificial or anything; the lemon wasn't very good to me. The vanilla was too strong. Long day ago in a galaxy far, far away, the best was going to the little Dairy Queen in Marshall (drive up only, but not drive thru) and get a Coke or Dr Pepper with their vanilla or cherry syrup! MAN that was good!!

What I have yet to figure out is why the heck we need 4 or 5 different types of diet Coke, and not the flavored ones, just the various diet ones blink.gif .

I'm also trying to ween myself off of soda completely. I drink it way to much now... I once went a year and a half without a soda, but then I fell off the wagon. I'm drinking a lot of green tea now.

But when it comes to soda, I love Dr. Pepper. Especially the pure cane sugar variety.

I also like to have a "Vanilla Dr. Pepper" occasionally which you can make yourself at the fountain at QT or Racetrac, but it's even better if you order it from Sonic. They mix it JUST RIGHT.

I’m pretty much off the soda habit, so I only purchase the odd ball stuff, like pure cane Coke or Jone’s, etc… makes for a nice treat after working hard, then head down to the 5th floor terrace and sip on an ice cold soda.

I only suggested an off topic section since everyone was so shocked at this topic being under "Misc" about a soft drink. The comments at first was "what a strange/odd topic for this forum". Umm I guess so...again Miscellaneous stuff right?

When I was a kid, the Dr. Pepper truck used to stop weekly at my grandfather's house. He's turning 97 this year and still drinks Dr. Peppers, but only the Dublin variety.
Despite his example, I drink far fewer D.P.s than I used to, but probably still too many. Green tea and water are the fallbacks.

Hi. I'm SAFLY, and I am a soda-holic. sad.gif

What's with the GREEN tea deal here. That's not TEXAN. Do sodas TRULY have bad side-effects? My mother told me so.

I'm not sure if the Mexico CC's are "pure cane", but I do believe it is less refined. SA ENews had a story on the Mexican CC's being "unmonitored" when coming across the border, and denting CC domestic profits. Much more superior product from MX, IMHO. Our soda bottles have paper nutri. labels that are stuck to it. Driving through Glen Rose and Parker County onward to SA, those small roadside businesses are so PROUD of that Dublin DP.

When I went through a two week stretch of cutting from 4-5 soft drinks to 1 diet drink a day back at the first of the year, I lost five pounds. That was the only change I made to my diet and exercise regimen. That's not proof they're bad for you, but I think they have their negative side effects.

D&G's ginger beer.

I love that stuff. Also very excellent is a rival brand of ginger beer from England called Idris which can be purchased at both Central Market and at the Fiesta Mart on 8th Avenue. Goya, an American company with a large line of ethnic foods, also has a decent ginger beer - though I am not sure where one can buy it in Fort Worth.

My all time favorite soda pop is Moxie. it is a local New England soft drink. For a brief while, it (along with some other non-Moxie flavored sodas sold under the Moxie name) was carried by Cost Plus World Market - but, despite the fact that it sold well (and I could always be counted on buying out the remainder of whatever was on the shelf anytime I visited), they discontinued it in order to make way for something new. Apparently they change out their offerings on a periodic basis on the premise people would become bored with the store if just carried the same merchandise all the time. Here is an interesting article about the soft drink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moxie Moxie has a taste that is VERY unusual. The first time I ever tried the stuff, I thought it was absolutely vile. But I noticed that it certainly quenched my thirst. After a few cans, I became very addicted to the stuff. Anytime someone I know makes a trip to New England, I always beg them to bring me back a few bottles.

Also good is Dr. Brown's Cel-ray soda - which is flavored with celery seeds, of all things.

My primary beverage of choice, however, is hot tea. Here at home, I only use leaf tea as the stuff that they put in tea bags is inferior. My current favorite in the morning is Taylors of Harrogate Pure Assam which, happily, is carried by Central Market. On weekend afternoons, I enjoy a good Darjeeling. I also have become quite addicted to an herbal tea that Central Market sells in the bulk tea section called Cinnamon Cardamom Spice. At work, I use tea bags as loose tea is just too much mess and hassle in an office environment. There I drink Constant Comment, which is an orange spice tea and is the brand that got me hooked on tea when I was a kid.

Anyone here ever try a soda pop called birch beer? Some years back, I saw a generic supermarket brand of it at a New England supermarket. Knowing that it was an old time flavor, I decided to give it a try. The soda was clear in color like Sprite. I spit it out the very instant I tasted it and flushed the rest of it down the toilet. It tasted exactly like carbonated Pepto Bismol - a flavor that I equate with being sick to my stomach as a kid. Yuck. I wondered why anyone on earth would drink something like that. Then it occured to me. I'll bet that when Pepto Bismol first came out, the people who tried it said: "This medicine is yummy - it tastes just like birch beer." Of course, today, birch is no longer a well known flavor - but most people are familar with Pepto Bismol. Ugghh. .

The soft drink I really miss is the old Byerly's brand. When I was a kid growing up in San Antonio in the early 50's, this is all I drank (besides the "good for you" drinks like milk etc.). As I recall it was available in only two flavors: Grape and Orange. Nothing like a Byerly's on a hot summer day when you're 7!

I tried some Coke Blak while I was on my trip to Lake McQueeney a few weeks ago. Didn't think it was that bad, but it wasn't something I'd go out of my way to buy again.

Coke Zero is my favorite current Coke. Way better than Diet Coke, and just as less worse for you.

I like the Tab Energy drink. It has a very light taste.
The only down side is the price of $1.99 and the very small amount of liquid in that cute little can.

Such a girly drink.

I can't believe that no one mentioned Big Red. That has to be my favorite all time. Followed closely by Dr. Pepper and then Mug Root Beer.

They don't sell Big Red here on the West Coast so now when I go back to Texas to visit I have to buy myself a 12 pack to satisfy my craving for it. When we have family get-togethers and Big Red is in the fridge or ice chest it's the first brand to disappear. I also like the new Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper. I would have to say that I prefer it over the original. Also, in my opinion I still believe that Dr. Pepper makes the best diet drinks. They don't seem to have a strong after taste like some of the others do.

The Fiesta Mart on 8th Avenue has a Cuban soda pop - or at least it was a Cuban soda pop until the owners had to flee to escape the Castro dictatorship - called Iron Beer. It is now made in Miami. The soda dates back to 1917 and was once known as the Cuban "national beverage." The stuff is actually quite good. I bought a six pack recently and will probably buy more on occasion. For a history of the product see: http://www.sunshineb...com/history.htm

If anyone is still looking to find Mexican Coca-Cola, you can usually get it at Fiesta Mart and also at Central Market.
