I'm reading Gamblers and Gangsters book and I'm curious as to where the exact spot of this club was. The book shows 2 pics, one of a road leading to the 2222 Club, and another of the 2222 sign. Is this sign still standing? Which road is this? Are there any remains left of the club, like maybe the foundation?

I've looked at MSN Live Search bird's-eye view map and I don't have a clue.

Also, what's the history of the old Massey's building and The Rocket?

seems like I remember The Rocket being a hispanic night club back in the 70's and 80's. . .

I'm not real smart about adding links, etc, etc, but did a search using "2222" and there is a thread from a couple of years ago that has a lot of information about JB Hwy and the Four Deuces. It's in the Local History Section and is titled like the book, Gangsters and Gamblers.....

That is a really good book (what parts I've read) and the history of that area is fascinating. Always learnin' something new from that era.

2222 Jacksboro Highway -- up the hill.

Sidetrack - The more things change, the more they stay the same. Jacksboro Highway seems to have more of these gambling game rooms today per mile than any other highway. I used to count how many I would pass on the way to my place in Azle. It really irks me that these places are still doing business in spite of the Texas AG's ruling that they violate the law.

I suppose everyone knows that the Rocket is a muffler shop now. The Fort Worth Public Library's local history section in the basement of the downtown library has some memorabilia from when The Rocket was a dance club.

The cool neon sign, or what is left of it, is on the front of the muffler shop. It sits on the north side of Jacksboro somewhere near Adam Ave. and Belle Ave.

I'm reading Gamblers and Gangsters right now, VERY interesting book. I grew up in North Side and never knew any of this kind of history. Although I wish it had more specific addresses to some of the locations it mentions. The Keller Library had the book.

The 2222 sign was there until pretty recently. I forget exactly how long it was ago - but I drove through the area and there was construction equipment on the site and I did not see the sign. I assume that it has gone - but perhaps I just wasn't looking in the right place as I drove by. The sign was at 2222 Jacksboro Highway so it should be easy enought to check out. The sign itself was not anything remarkable and I had not read about it in a book, I doubt that I would have ever noticed it in the first place.

A pic of the sign is in the book, but it's a recent pic of it rusted-looking. When i say recent, I mean probably from the 90s when the book was published.

I looked through Google Earth and saw a curved dirt road next to the RV place, west of Diamond Shamrock and east of the Avalon Motel. That leads to what looks like 2 areas of rubble which I'm guessing was the spot.

It is now a vacant lot across the street from the auto auction down from the Avalon.

Along with the reputation of gambling at the 2222, there was also a fine dinner club featuring Pete Peeples Fine Foods. The Club specialized in steaks and seafoods. I have a menu listing the best selected aged K.C. Sirloin was just $4.00 and Broiled Alaskan King Crab was $2.75.
