Now here is a real quiz for Fort Worthers: Do you recall this phone number? (817) 844-6611.

Nothing dirty, honest. It was and still is a real phone number.

It's the Fort Worth National That's My Bank Time and Temperature number. It still is the bank's Time and Temperature number, but now the bank has changed names at least four time. It's now Chase.

I had forgotten that one. There used to be a number that you could dial and hang up and it would ring the phone you dialed out on -1141 or 1191?
It no longer works but got me out of a lot of boring situations.

If I recall correctly you could dial 844 and any number to get the "Team Bank" or whatever bank time and temperature. While we're on the subject I also recall dialing BUG-RUGS to get the high-pitched "siren" tone (which I just did, still works). Also the always humurous 9-7-1-2-#, then hang up three times and the phone rings back. Ahh, memories from junior high.

Those numbers bring back memories.. the 844 any number was great for giving to people you didn't want to have your real number, like guys you met at Six Flags in front of the Speelunckers cave, yea I was guilty of that, and the 9-7-1-2, if there was a seat in the house you wanted to sit in, you would just ring the phone and tell that person it was for them so they would get up... So much fun

^^^ Yeah! Me too!

It was fun as a kid to dial 844 and then any four digits to get that time/temp recording. We called it every morning before school so we would know what to wear for the day (temp-wise).

Ahhh, the memories!

I had never heard of the Bug Rugs number before - but I seem to remember a number which made a similar noise when I was a kid growing up in Dallas County.

Here is an explanation for the number that I found online. Supposedly it is to test whether or not your phone line is bugged:

Dallas had, and still does have, 844-6611 as well - it when to the old Republic Bank - which became First Republic then North Carolina National Bank Texas National Bank then NationsBank then Bank of America. It also worked in such a way that it was 844 followed by any four digits.

This was before my time - but I am told that years ago before the phone technology changed, there were ways that you could somehow listen to other people who were also dialed in to the time and temperature. I am not sure exactly how it worked but I have read of this in several places.

I remember using the numbers 955-9933 and 955-9982 to get free metro and three-way calling, you could only use it for ten minutes or so and it would drop. You could call -9934 (-9983) if someone was using it and call wait to them to see if they were still on. This was back in the ealry 80's when 214 still encompassed all of Dallas.

There was also a number you could call and would hear a ticking of an old father clock. Urban kid legend was that someone was murdered by a shotgun and stuffed into the clock. Can't recall that number though.

Ahhh, the days of the Apple IIe, a 1200 baud modem, and phone phreaking...

Arlington Funeral Home also has its own time/temp number: 277-4000. I used to call that one because they also gave a weather forecast. I believe the Chase time/temp number now has that feature.
