The Kress building was sold to the owner of the El Fenix restaurant chain (Yes, you read that right)

"Design work is underway for a restaurant on the first floor of the building..."

The owners aren't saying if it's going to be an El Fenix, or another one of their concepts.

El Fenix, huh...?

I don't know what to feel about this.

The article says they have 4 different restaurant concepts currently, and this could be the place to start a new one... don't count them out before they start!

Had no idea that they were owned by the same group as Snuffers. That would be a perfect fit for the F&H space and it would do great in that location.

A new restaurant there will be great.

A burgers and bar food place that got its original start on Lower Greenville in Dallas and has since expanded out into the 'burbs (they've been in Southlake for 5 years or so now). Their signature item is a massive plate of heart-attack inducing cheddar fries. The location in Southlake is more of a sports bar (TVs everywhere), is incredibly family friendly, and has a real nice patio tucked into a shady spot next to the bar that is on a busy intersection of Town Square (people watching). I'm sure it could be argued that downtown has enough of that genre, so it's highly likely that Firebird is going with another concept in the Kress Building.

I hope it's one of the other concepts.  El Fenix is what I thought "Mexican food" was before I went to college at UTEP :swg:.

Bud Kennedy is reporting via Facebook that 1 of 2 FW locations of Firebird's Meso Maya will go in the Kress space.

Bud Kennedy writes about the Meso Maya that will soon open on Hulen (former Rockfish building). What caught my eye is the carefully worded reference to the Meso Maya in the Kress building: "The company has been guarded about other openings. A downtown Meso Maya was planned." I could be reading too much into this, but his use of past tense seems to add a fair degree of uncertainty.

Dallas’ 3rd Meso Maya opens, and can Fort Worth’s be far behind?

I wonder if this is still Meso Mayo?  I believe the Hulen location opens soon.

Austin, I can't tell from your photograph, but it looks like they have gutted the historic interior.  However, you are looking in on the Main Street side where a mezzanine was added.  This mezzanine was free and clear of the original interior, so that it could be preserved.  I guess I will need to look in the windows along both street fronts when I can.  The last I heard, this was still going to be Meso Mayo.

I'd never heard of Kress, growing up in Buffalo, NY, so I was surprised to see Kress described in the article as a "New York retailer."  Looking at Wiki, it looks like they were located in the South, Mid-West and West, but not really in the Northeast at all.

I think that the New York Times confirms the "New York Retailer" angle.

Thanks for the link, Renamerusk.  That Kress store the article mentioned on Fifth Avenue in New York was demolished in 1980, only three years after the Kress store closed.  I only remember the chain from when I was a kid, but I do know there are several Kress buildings still standing in Texas.  Doohickie, since the chain was dwindling as I was growing up, I can't really tell how many stores they had and where they had them, but it could be that they never expanded north of New York City. I will admit that I always thought they were based in NYC.

It looks like they were based in NYC but from looking at Wikipedia it doesn't appear they ever moved into Upstate.  There were already several retails there I suspect so it was not an attractive market.  The 5 & 10 I remember is Kresge's, which is the K in K-Mart.  There as an S.S. Kresge store in the shopping center closest to my parents' house for years; I think it was still there when I went away to college in 1980.  They basically had everything K-Mart had but with less variety.  Still, it was one of my favorite places to go (maybe because it was a short bicycle ride so I could go there myself and shop without parental supervision!)

EDIT:  The store is a Dollar General now, and people still ride their bikes there!

Snuffer's in Southlake Town Square was shuttered this week after being in operation for a decade or so. It's probably just a coincidence, but it could indicate a deeper issue with Firebird. My wife asked someone at the Colleyville location yesterday and they indicated that rent in Southlake was high and bar business was low.

It is kind of a little sad that it couldn't have been purchased by the adjacent hotel owner and redesigned as necessary (if possible) so the lower floors could have been incorporated into the public space design of the hotel, expanding on the very narrow property the hotel is working with.

They could buy it now and add it on to their hotel.  Adding possibly additional restaurant, bar, and meeting space.

The developers already had plans for a restaurant space in their building.  The entire frontage along both Main and 5th Streets was planned for the hotel lobby and retail space.

I know I should not be too judgmental, because lots of types of people get tattoos, but it is interesting to me to consider that this is the tenant that is the best fit for a location immediately adjacent to one of our new hotels.

It's 2021... *shrug*  Pretty much everyone has a tattoo these days, so I doubt that'll matter.

That being said, I'm surprised it won't be another bar since that strip of downtown seems like the perfect bar district. Well, outside of West 7th, anyway.
