As I could not really find one, I thought I would start a Topic of Sundance Square events. I can take shots from my balcony which to me is kind of a fun perspective. Not much intellectual fodder here, just silly pics. And who know, you may want to find yourself in the crowd! (Whoops, sorry. I assumed that was your wife!)

This is an annual event put on by the Flying Saucer Restaurant. It is a beer tasting. They lucked out and had 87 degree temps on Oct. 11. Was a nice (Read quiet) event.

.

50 years or less from now people will be looking at these pictures in the same way we look at old pictures now I'm sure.
That looks like a fun event they have going there. I had not heard about it although I have made several visits over the years to the Flying Saucer. That is a really neat place and in a historical building to boot.
So many times they level the old buildings and put in more "modern" ones. That is something I have great appreciation for

They were setting up this morning for the Annual Ranch Bash concert going down tomorrow Oct. 24.
This is a huge Country Music event that has been really amazing the last two years I have been living downtown. I am not a big Country Music fan but I like the really good stuff. They had it last year and are this year again. (When I know most of the people performing they must be big.) Could be they planned this event with Country fans coming to Fort Worth already for Willie Nelson playing Tonight at Billy Bob's.

I was amazed at the Ranch Bash crowd last year. Thousands of Country music fans. It seemed like every one of them knew every word of every song. They sang along! I have never seen anything like it. I really enjoyed listening to the bands. And the crowd seemed like a bunch of good people. Families and friends. Behaved. Throwing their trash in trash cans. (Even though there where enough beer trucks to line up on end from coast to coast.) It is like nothing else by my experience. It is not free. Tickets are 7-17 bucks, I just looked on the Ranch's web site. For all day, big names, seems fair enough. It sure will be perfect weather for it. Here is a shot of the initial stage setup. Will post pics of the event. Find yourself in the crowd.

The Ranch Bash 2008 event yesterday (Saturday) was great. Thousands of people, all singing and cheering. It is really a very special event.
I took 150 pics from dawn to 10pm. I am sending them to the Ranch radio station for their amusement. They might could use the pics from above for next year's planning or promo or whatever. Here are a few pics. If you were there or are REALLY interested, I have also included a link to a 67 picture slide show. (This is the link I gave to the radio station to pick pictures they might like to download. The average Forum member might think I should have picked the 10 best.) Today's event is also Country. (old Country) Country Legend's Fest. Surprise, I am taking pics of that also...

Here is the slide show, if you are really interested...
Be sure to click the box with arrows in the bottom right hand corner to fill the screen.

And if you are less interested, take a look...

Monee - you could probably earn your keep by selling these photos to event hosts and downtown promoters like Sundance Square and the CVB!

Must be nice to have a city to pay for an Angel to watch over you for the holidays. ---I guess they still put Angels on the top of them.

Here is a sneak preview of the lights on the Sundance Square Christmas Tree. (Not to spoil your Christmas).
They had the lights on tonight as they were decorating the tree. In my second shot you can see an Elf (I'll call him Elf #9) operating a lift as he is decorating the tree.

I promise not to post a photo of our Fort Worth Christmas tree every time they put a new ornament on it. From now on, if they don't put at least two ornaments on it I will withhold the image. Seriously, they have been working hard on this tree for several days. It is a really huge job. They have a lift over there that has been busy night and day. This is not like the $29. pre-lit tree I got at Target last year. This thing really is a big deal.

I am seeing new decorations all over Downtown every day. I am excited about the Parade of Lights the Friday after Thanksgiving. That is about the only parade I really love. Really spectacular.

As the real (Still with roots and spitting oxygen) trees change colors, the Christmas tree becomes the green standout.

You may have seen my tree lighting pic in the Parades thread, so I will not double post. But contrast that pic, with thousands of cheering revilers to this pic. I would call this pic, "The Morning After". Long after the cheering fans went home, and after a heavy dew had fallen, a shot from pre-dawn.

Surely, you meant "cheering revellers." The phrase you used conjured up a vision of all the Scrooges in Texas gathered to say "Bah, humbug!"

Thanksgiving Day was pretty dead downtown:

I think this is a little misleading:

I only had a 35mm lens so I couldn't spot monee's lens sticking out:

We ended up watching the Cowboy game at the Fox and Hound:

Great pics Papaw. Funny, the only reason you did not see my tripod on my balcony on 34 was that I had it at the farm in Arlington for Thanksgiving.

I have never been in the Fox and Hound. Looks nice. I'd liked to have met you for an FPB (Festive Party Beverage)
It was lucky that you dragged your own 14 foot step ladder with you to get that shot. newlaugh.gif

About 6:50 this morning. I see a bunch more Christmas stuff down there. Have seen Santa down there a few times. (Note to Santa: your sleigh would surely be more efficient if you would lay off those simple carbohydrates for a few months.)

The first of three Cowboy Santa toy drives. Drop off point was right in front of the tree Wednesday morning.

Today was the 2008 Jingle Bell Run. A really great event. I have run in it 4 of the last 5 years. Not today. Today I am taking pictures of it. (Lazy people always have an excuse)

One additional comment. For these foot races. If you have a dog/dogs or a baby in a buggy, get to the back of the race crowd. Having dogs and baby's up front is unsafe and borderline rude. Runners don't want to be dodging little dogs and the like. And if you like your dog/baby, you don't really want it stepped on, do you? I hear this from many runners and walkers. Be considerate. Not many people think they are going to win the race but most of the rest are trying to get their best times etc...

I have a few pictures for you attached. Before, during and after the event. And for those really interested in it, Like you were there etc., I have also include the link to my slide show with 100 pictures. (Not all award winners.)

Here are the few:

Before the event at 6:30 this morning. Our Porta Potty's are here!

And here comes the sun...

Early AM

Afternoon setting up

Crowds at the starting line on Houston Street

Off and running North on Houston

Waiting to move on the start

Running on Belknap

Runners coming back for fun and games

Crowds are back

And if you still haven't had enough, here are the hundred in a slide show.

No connection, I don't believe. Was confusing. I saw the fireworks, grabbed my big lens to take a few pictures, and then noticed there was no audience for the fireworks. Did not see a single car in the La Grave parking lot. (Location of the fireworks.) It was as though they were testing them or something. Pretty crazy.

Of course I don't know that some rich guy on the other side of the river didn't pay for the whole thing as a celebration of his daughter getting a B in Algebra or something. (My parents would have given me fireworks if I had made a C in Algebra. newlaugh.gif )

On two separate occasions I have been on the bike trail South of the court house and the fire works went off at La Grave. Once I was right next to it and walked up the hill to look in and there was no one around. I thought the same thing, a test or something. Both of these times it was in the afternoon, no holiday and out of baseball season. I'm sure these commercial scale fireworks aren't cheap.

I forgot to check this web site. It is very useful for figuring out what is coming up. (Or in our case, "What went down.") The fireworks is on that calender for Dec. 6th.

I think this site is kind of new, but it is getting more and more useful each time I check it.
I believe it is all Fort Worth related.

The 2008 BIG TEXAS TOY RUN.

The worst event of the year, in my opinion.

I started with good intentions like 20 years ago. I lot of little kids need a toy for Christmas and if you don't give them one, they won't get one. Now who could argue that that is not a just and noble premise? In concept it was great. I believe it has turned in to a tragic disaster of an event. I have been watching this event for at least 15 years. I used to stand by the highway with my American Flag to cheer them on. (I have a pic of me doing just that.)

What went wrong? Everything.

A. The event has gotten larger every year to include Fort Worth, Dallas and Grapevine. Huge. VERY HUGE. They estimate 100k riders will participate. That alone would not present a problem if people were waking their toy to their local charity. But put that many vehicles on the road, at once, in the Metroplex, drive 15mph, and you have a recipe for a very bad day. This event basically shuts down 3 cities for the day. It effectively closes Interstate 30 for hours. Unacceptable. If I was a smart man, I would calculate the environment consequences of shutting down our major arteries for an afternoon while adding in the additional pollution of 100,000 motorcycles. Motorcycles, though they frequently use less gas than cars, pollute a lot more. A lot more. They have basically been unregulated for their entire existence with a few recent exceptions. There is nothing green about motorcycles driven for more than a very short distance. (All vehicles pollute horribly for the few miles necessary to heat up their engines and catalytic converters.)

B. Noise pollution. It has become a crisis in this Country. More and more motorcycles have effectively scrapped any noise muffling. Many have noise amplifiers. I can frequently hear bad motorcycles for miles out of town. When I hike the mountains of Colorado I am so disappointed that no matter how far in the wilderness I go, I still hear loud, rude motorcycles. This is a problem that I am going to tackle, big time. It is completely unacceptable. Why should I be awoken at midnight or kept from enjoying my home any time of the day? This is primarily men that think they need to mark their territory. Please, just urinate on the fire hydrants and forget the loud pipes.

So even though it started with good intentions, and there are still thousands of people that participate with good intentions, the event should come to an end. It is not helping kids in the long run. It is making their air dirty. It is making their city loud. It is keeping mom and dad from getting to Target to get their last minute Christmas gifts.

Giving toys to needy kids is a great cause. But keep your dirty teddy bear at the house, write out a check for 50 bucks (what you would have spent for gas, booze and wear and tear) and send a check to these same great charities or any others. Or put it in your backpack and get on your quiet, clean bicycle and peddle it to your favorite charity or home.

And for those of you with kind hearts and quiet clean motorcycles that participated in this dirty event, Bless you. Really.

You are expecting pictures of this huge event like usual. Yes I took many of the thousands of motorcycles 400 feet below me. But I will not post them, as to encourage the event. I am posting two pictures that made my day. I would love to know how these signs came about. Because that's where my money is going this Christmas.

SOMEBODY has common sense...

I am grateful to whoever made these banners. (Who did?)

Looking out my windows this morning at the nice rain washed views. Then I look straight down. "Gee, what are all the pretty yellow trucks?" I ask myself...

I then switch lenses. (60 to 400) Yikes. Critter control?

Technically not in Sundance Square, but close enough. Tonight was the Davey O'Brien award at The Fort Worth Club. Did not have a clue. I was wondering when I got home and was in the parking garage. Many men had tuxedo's on. (Surely not for Zippy's I thought)

Had I known I probably would have gone over that way to check out the Limos. (Sam Bradford, won, of course.) Saw many stars on the news there tonight. Past winners like Troy Aikman as well as current crop like, Colt McCoy, etc... Shoot.

Setting up for the 2009 Cowtown Marathon. Trying to think up an excuse to not go down there and run the 5k tomorrow... Major porta-potty action. If they would stop supplying water for these races they wouldn't need so many potties! Stand-by for more shots of the event tomorrow.

At race start I checked with the National Weather Service. 32° and 36 mph wind. OUCH! Just had to effect the outcome. But the largest crowd ever for the Cowtown. These people are a lot tougher than my wife and I. We had a couple of cousins running (That used our place as home base and as a babysitting camp) so my wife walked over to The Corner Bakery for a box of simple carbohydrates for our visitors. She came in saying she would never go outside again. I would go out on my balcony for one minutes stretches taking pics thinking I was going to freeze to the railing. My cousins were out there running in their shorts? I will keep you updated with their temperatures this next week...
The medical community tried to convince the public through the 90's that being cold doesn't give you a cold. Now they are back to the common sense grandma had saying, "When you get cold your resistance is lower." I have many examples of just that. True, when you are running your body temp is much higher than just walking or standing, but still, at some temperature/ wind level you are at risk, so it it would seem.

Surely a great event for Fort Worth. It brings only good people to our city. Unlike events I won't mention... (Motorcycle run madgo.gif)

I give to all the runners year after year who brave the elements. How did the kids like the view from your place?

Brave indeed. A LOT of will power.
And the kids? Though they have never been here before, show me two little girls that have a new little sister and I'll show you three kids that aren't impressed with a view! (Proof below.)

Today was the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. A great event as it is every year. The best crowd in Fort Worth. No litter, no stupid loud motorcycles, no peeing in the bushes. Just great people supporting a great cause. I took 200 pictures with 3 lenses as well as Hi Def movies with both my camera and my wife's new Hi Def Camcorder. I will spare you the 200 pics here but if you were in the race I probably got you so send me a message. May post a movie clip or two later.

Here is your winner! (he was lucky I was not running... had to take pics...)

Was there a sale on Pink somewhere?

It is a way touching crowd. like the only time I get kind of emotional. At 7am they have a "Survivors Breakfast" etc... Makes me realize my troubles are not so insurmountable. (Like how do I get get proper exposure on that bright sky and ground at the same time?)

Turns out I took 340 pictures and 9 movies. Posted 280 of the pics in a slide show. Mostly for the events planning purposes. If you were involved in the race or really interested here is the link. Warning: for enjoyment purposes the 280 pics should have been reduced to 50 or so. But I want the organizers and survivors etc... to have what I have. They are hi quality pics if you want to watch a few slides and bail. (Chronological, starting with setup the day before and ending with cleanup.) Hit the full screen button on bottom right of your viewing screen.

They did live one mark on the landscape. A ton of ice. Was wishing I had a pet polar bear to take down there.

Now that is one slide show with a lot of Pink. Again and what a great cause and your exactly right, sometimes our issues are nothing.

The set up is done! Bring on the crowds... I always like that stage set up along side the Kress building. Seems to fit. Interesting acoustics.

I never thought I would say this but I wish we had something like what Arlington has in that spot.

They did an awesome job. This is a high quality stage for FREE outdoor music. BTW, they've got a new Fuzzy's in downtown Arlington too.

Nice photo, but it should only be 900 pixels maximum on the long side so that it displays properly. smile.gif
