Favorite Bar, Pub, Club in FW

Was in FW over the weekend. On Saturday night, started out with a great meal at Reata, went to Chili's downtown and had a martini on your advice - and it was a fine martini by the way. Then went to this really cool and hip and hip and cool bar on Camp Bowie called Baker Street, which was packed full of the most interesting, individual, and fine looking characters I've seen since my days on 46th Street in New York City. Then... went to a bar downtown called Pete and Joe's (or Tim and Bob's perhaps) Dueling Pianos and it was packed - to the rafters - with a rockin' crowd of all ages, all types, and everyone was having a blast - except maybe the overworked bartenders. Oh, by the way, folks at the two tables behind us were from Dallas. My new favorite bar in the world has changed from O'Flaugherty's in NYC to the Dueling Piano Bar in Fort Worth. Sorry you haven't found the nightlife in ole' Cowtown to your liking - among other FW things - but I have to say, there's a lot of fun energy in Panther City and me and my friends from New York had a blast. How was your martini at Motel Zsa Zsa? By the way, Pottery Barn called and wants their furniture back from that place...

...a night in FW is like a night in your local Addsion strip mall.
Maybe most of Addison's restaurants and clubs are not housed in historic or architecturally significant, and perhaps most of them are chain operations, but the success that small city has had in attracting and keeping their service and entertainment businesses is worthy of study by other cities. The proximity of a vibrant nightlife may be one of the contributing factors for the success of the innovative (well, urbanistic and dense) mixed use / residential that has flourished there. Most people out for a drink and dinner with friends or looking to meet people are probably less concerned about the corporate structure of the establishment they patronize than with the quality of the product and service and the crowd it attracts.

I don't have a big problem with big corporate chains--they have their place--I just don't go to them if I'm looking for good nightlife.
FW has plenty of good places to drink, eat, drink, people watch, drink, and socialize. Places that are unique, that let you know you are nowhere else but FW. I might have to lead a pub crawl the next time I'm in town.

Amen, I don't care if a club/resturaunt is chain or not. Who cares if there is 1 or 1,000 of them? When me and my girlfriend or my buds go out to eat, we don't sit there and decide to step in a place if it ranks at or above a Chili's or Bennigians. What's wrong with those 2 places anyways? Beat's Mcdonalds or Taco Bell any day lol. Point is you don't need to go to a exotic locale to enjoy yourself. Some of us have simple pleasures.

Your're kidding right???? Are you talking about Baker St. Pub, like the ones in the Houston area??? They're a Houston chain, that are just a little step up from your local Bennigan's. And the Dueling Piano place..is that the same or simililar to that cheezzzy place that's been in Addison next to the Improv forever???. I went there (Addison) a year ago to celebrate a birthday for the father of a coworker...he was turning 62. I don't know if Addison is blessed enought to have a Baker St., but I know there's a Bennigan's and with the Dueling Piano Place and Chili's...a night in FW is like a night in your local Addsion strip mall. I did go to happy hour at Dragonfly (ZaZa) last week and although it was full of the type of Dallas people I hate, I had a great time.....but I guess I shouldn't brag...I mean it can't be that great a place...there's not one in Addison.
My question is why do you frequent this forum that discusses such a boring place?
I (as crazy as it seems ) feel glad to be in Fort Worth and feel that it fits my needs. Is it perfect? No? Is it Dallas? No (and why would I ever want it to be?). Is it Seattle? No, but it's certainly is not the worst place in the world. I've been bored to tears being right there amongst the action, having gone to private parties (Magic Johnson, Puffy, MJ and Shaq), Super Bowls, and NBA finals in New York, LA, and South Beach (how much booty shakin' can a man stand ?), so there's nothing in Dallas that's going to impress me.
Believe it or not, Fort Worth has played a major part in making the entire metroplex a good place to live.

I have a hard time second guessing the finicky patterns of Sundance patrons as to what’s going to be the place to hang and I literally live there. Before I actually lived in Sundance-Land I’d assumed that I could critique an establishment fairly accurately, not so sure anymore. Some areas are easy, As in; are the wait staff attentive and on the ball? Is the beer served cold or at 8.0’s average of 68 to 72 degrees? Live music? Everything else seems to change with the phase of the moon so how to compare Fort Worth with Addison or Addison to Deep Ellum has to involve some calculus, otherwise it’s analogous to comparing apples to oranges to mixed fruit.

Oh, vjackson, how I love to tweak you! Actually, you're probably pretty cool. It's just fun to yank your chain as they say up here. Really, though, I had a great time Saturday night in Fort Worth. I was visiting with friends. We live in New York. You should know, all of us have quite a resume of partying in big cities all over the world so I know of what I speak. I don't know who owns those bars - Baker Street and Dueling Pianos -but, believe me, we had a blast. We are male and female, gay and straight, and range from 30 to 43 in age. Again, we had a blast in Fort Worth! By the way, where's Addison?

Do you know how many times I've said Fort Worth and have heard "Where is that???"
I don't expect anyone outside of DFW to know where Addison is...it's a what... 3 square mile surburb. So your "exactly" is really moot. Next time you travel, ask someone where Crowley is.

Your're not yanking my chain...I'm just sarcastic by nature. And yes, I am cool. Just curious, what is your FW connection?? If you noticed I didn't say I did not have fun at Dueling Pianos...I had a blast there also..cheese and all. I was in New York over the XMAS holidays and got the pleasure of checking out the new H&M store. Awesome!!!!

We went to Baker Street last Saturday. I was NOT impressed. VERY poor service and overpriced beverages. The beer prices were $1-$2 higher than every other bar in Fort Worth! Sorry but I am not going to pay $4 for a bottle of Coors Light. We saw several waitstaff standing around doing nothing while people were waiting on orders and checks. Our server forgot to bring my blue cheese, then when I reminded her, she brought me a cup of blue cheese DRESSING instead of actual cheese as I had requested. She also forgot my water and had to be reminded. Then I overheard her telling the booth behind us how she "didn't really want to be a waitress" and was biding her time until something better came along.
Good points: Food was tasty, I will give them that. I like the fact that they have a late night menu. "Happy Hour" prices (2 to 9 PM on the weekends) were good, $6 pitchers.
Overall I was not impressed. Typical Bennigan's type chain.

I am from Fort Worth. Went to South Hills/Monnig/Southwest/Baylor. Moved to New York to complete my edumacation in '89 and stayed because I landed a good job there. Still, though, have an intense fondness and strong interest in Fort Worth and visit often. I think they put something in the water or do some brainwashing in the FWISD because I have found that, like me, most Fort Worthians are fiercely loyal to their town. So be it Dueling Pianos, Chili's, the Kimbell, Angelo's, or even Super Target, if it's in Fort Worth, it's the best! In any case, after a couple of martini's, one could be in Waco, land a pretty face, and think they are in paradise. My really favorite bar in Fort Worth doesn't exist anymore. Does anyone remember the great place behind the Dunkin Donuts on Camp Bowie by Horne Street? A beer on John Roberts for anyone who can remember the name.

Good to be back at the FWForum Lounge. WHAT UP PLAYERS! Shout out to the name and town droppin fools from YANK-E-Town!
Land a pretty face in WACO! You must be talkin about one of them A-Chi-O's . Other than that, it ain't NO "pair o dice".
Wow, sorry about that one lady. Looks like they would have brought on over the BLUE MEN Group before your crumbled CHEEZZZZE. Service like that would have made me tarrrred. I don't understand her train of thought. Be a waitress in COWTOWN, serve poorly, and tell others that she really does not want to serve them. What better something could she be in this town? An actress? Not here! Was she magically gonna get that phone call from Mr. Wood to tell her that she has the main dancer job in his next "artsy production" ? Gotta feel sorry for those kinds of people, the ones who don't appreciate PEOPLE WHO GIVE THEM MONEY in exchange for great SERVICE and a wonderful smile. CHEESE!

Meanwhile, my search for a superior neighborhood bar and grill continues...
Ironically, I've already found a great place in Wichita Falls called the Iron Horse. No luck in Fort Worth, yet.
Another Wichita Falls place I'd recommend is Frank's Place. I don't know if it is still open, but they used to bring in great blues bands. The kind you wouldn't want your children the hear or your mother to know that you like.
In Downtown Ft. Worth - I like the rooftop bar at Reatta, but the service is hit and miss. Del's has a great liquor $election, but they're pretty proud of it. The Pour House is very comfortable. Pete's is a hoot. It's better than the one in Addison, but not as cool as the one in Austin.
In greater Ft. Worth, I highly recommend The University Pub, by TCU. Dave, the owner and bartender, is unquestionably the best bartender I've ever been around. The first time I came in, he asked my name once and never forgot it. The second time I came in, he knew what I wanted and had it waiting for me at the bar when I got there. It's not elegant. It's for real bar people. The bar is a great dive and there are TCU women all over the place. If not for the recent addition of children, I'd still be there a couple nights a week.

Not the Su Su. That's a great place, though. Is it still around? The place I'm referring to had a live band every night, really divey, was a hangin' place for British expats, and provided my first exposure to a pint of Guiness. Anyway, it was a great place any night of the week. My memory cells, obviously depleted, can't remember the name. I think they relocated downtown for while before going belly up forever.

Given the current state of our educational system, I guess there might be someone in this country who doesn't know Dallas is in Texas. But I've been all over the country and have yet to meet someone who doesn't know where Dallas is. And as for your "who cares" comment goes..you were the one who said something stupid. "By the way where's Addison"....(You)" Exactly!" Did you stay up late thinking of that witty comeback???

So does anyone have a favorite bar in Fort Worth, one that’s still in business?
In my experience, there is no perfect bar, just bars that are right for a night or your mood, etc. I like different bars for different reasons.
SalLouie's if I'm with my friends and there's no stupid piano player
Pop's Safari if I'm feeling kind of silly and it's not too crowded and there's no stupid piano player
Reata's rooftop if I'm feeling really particular about my tequila and the weather's right
Flying Saucer if I'm in a beer mood on a week night
Grape Escape if I want port, sherry, and don't want to have to shout to have a conversation
J&J Blues bar if I want live music
etc.

It's not in business anymore, but I really miss the Sundown on 7th. There were a few years I spent more time in there than I did at home. It's called The Shamrock now. Same location, same exterior walls, but a totally different place. Nice bar, poor dart area, incredible bathrooms (no kidding).
I usually don't go into bars and pubs unless they have dart boards. Bull & Bush on Montgomery is a nice pub. They just recently got a liquor license too, it used to be all Beer and Cider. Only two boards though.(Dartboard lighting isn't the best.)
Shuckers is another favorite of mine. They used to be located on W. Camp Bowie where the Old South used to be. They have moved even further West to a bigger place. Here's a panoramic of the interior during a recent benefit tournament my team put on:
Speaking of Crowley, there's a new place called Black Gold. I was really impressed with their dartboard setup. It's in an old roller rink, plenty of room and it still has the wood floor. The waitservice was really slow, but they run a good tournament.

Look's like Fuzzy's Tacos on Race Street is going to be my new favorite spot for the time being (I'd prefer something in downtown, but haven't found it yet). Who's up for a short beer after work today? I'll be at Fuzzy's from about 6:00 until 7:00 or so. I'll buy first round.
My favorite had been the Pub at the FWC, but that's gone now. I suspect my new favorite will be the new pub at the FWC when it open in April.

There were a lot of bands downtown last Sunday, tried to hit a few of the venues but our group got a late start so we didn’t catch very many. I like Paddy Reds mainly because they actually know how to pour Guinness, the fact that they always make an outstanding effort to ensure everyone in there is taken care of makes it a nice place to frequent.
I didn’t realize how nice Paddy’s was until we visited Rick O’Shea's to see if we could catch a couple of the bands we missed earlier. The bands were worth the trip, but hands down, the worst service I’ve encountered downtown in the two years I’ve lived here, perhaps they were just having a bad Sunday so I won’t rule out stopping in there again, but with all the options downtown…

For a quiet bar to visit and relax, it's the Fort Worth Club for me.
For excellent scenery, 8.0 in the summer, Bent Lounge when it's cold.
For getting out of towners loosened up, Joe T's in the summer.
For music... ... I don't know?
For watching sports... ...don't know?
To see interesting people. Fred's.
To drown my sorrows. University Pub.

'Ye ol Bull and Bush is great for watching soccer and rugby. I don't know where a good bar is to watch football or basketball. I try to avoid bars with big tvs.
I hear that Sixth Street Live is/will be the place for live music.

It would be nice if they had a little bit better selection on the food menu. I know they don't want a full kitchen, but better munchies would make this place a lot better.
IMO:
1. Finn McCools on 8th Street at Allen, is one of the best little pubs in town.
2. And it's pretty hard to beat Flying Saucer for choice of beer and variety of seating areas (upstairs bar inside is cool if you can stand the smoke).
3. It's tough to beat sitting outside Central Market on a nice evening drinking whatever you choose from inside, while listening to live music (much of it is local artists) and that smell of grillling meat.
4. A great new joint at Montgomery and Vickery - Flying Fish. Love the shrimp and catfish combo with a beer.
5. My back yard, sitting in the hottub drinking a nice cold beer.
