Bicycling in the Fort Worth Area and Texas

Fort Worth, Texas is a great place for recreational cycling as well as bicycle rallies. The following is a list of cycling events, training rides, and bicycle trails in the Fort Worth Area.  I have not been able to ride very much this year due to my work schedule, but plan to put in more miles in 2000.   If you have any questions, comments, or any feedback, feel free to e-mail John Roberts.

Texas has such a wonderful, warm climate that we can cycle year-round. In the winter, most days are cool, but usually not cold. In July and August the temperatures are usually around 100 degrees in the afternoons.  However, if you ride in the early morning, you can finish before it gets too hot.

I apologize for not posting updates more regularly.  There has been an illness in the immediate family that has kept me from cycling a great deal.  I hope to provide more listings of rides in 2002.

I am a member of The Fort Worth Bicycling Association and I have served on the board as President for one term in 1999-2000.  I also have served as Publicity/Special Events Chair for one term in 1998-1999 and I was Rides Chairman for the FWBA for two terms from 1991 to 1993. I have been a recreational cyclist for over 25 years in Texas.

Weekly Rides

If you live in the Fort Worth Area or you are visiting, come out and ride with us at the following locations and times. These rides listed below are FWBA club rides and are held each week at these times and locations:

Tuesday Mornings - 9:00 AM - Columbus Trail - Andy D'Ascenzo (817) 292-1770 or Dan Milburn (817) 926-2980. Ride on the many roads south of Fort Worth towards Crowley, Joshua, & Godley with "The Rusty Chain Gang". Most of the people who ride are retired or work the second shift. Distances are 10, 16, 24, and 30 miles. Dan and Andy are great people and offer good company and good times to all who participate. Take Hulen Street south from I-20 until the street ends at Columbus Trail. Turn left on Columbus for about 4 blocks. The "Chain Gang" meets at the City of Fort Worth Service Center.

Thursday Mornings - 9:00 AM - Westpark Elementary - Benbrook - Andy D'Ascenzo (817) 292-1770 or Dan Milburn (817) 926-2980. "The Rusty Chain Gang" meets at the Westpark Elementary School in Benbrook on Thursdays with the same routes as the Sunday ride. Distances are from 20 to 45 miles.

"The Paceline", newsletter of the Fort Worth Bicycling Association, has more detailed information and additional listings of club rides.

BIKE TRAILS

Fort Worth Trinity Trail

If you are not into riding on the road, Fort Worth has plenty of paved hike and bike trails running along the Trinity River and some of its tributaries. The trail is approximately 25 miles long with the main trail and its branches. The southwestern terminus of the trail is at Memorial Oak Park just north of the Lake Benbrook Dam. It is part of a trail extension from the old trailhead at Highway 183.  The new section of the trail is the most beautiful with a canopy of trees covering the trail.

Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway

This "Rails to Trails" project opened in late March of 1998. It is approximately 20 miles in length and the surface consists of hard packed crushed limestone with smaller granules on top. The scenery is beautiful along the route with Trailheads in Weatherford, Garner, and Mineral Wells. I would recommend using a bicycle with wide tires; however, I have heard that it is manageable with a road bike. There is a user fee for this trail.
